Belmont Roughie Tip
Belmont Roughie - Race 4 No. 4 Starwalker
The step from a mile to 2100m is significant fourth-up, but it should suit Starwalker, whose three career wins have all come at 2100m or further, including two staying victories last winter.
He went winless through a long spring and summer campaign but still produced several competitive efforts in stronger grade, including a third over 2200m in 66+ company at Ascot in January.
His 1300m return on July 4 was always going to be short of his best trip, yet the 200/1 chance still worked home nicely from the rear for seventh-of-16 before encountering excuses second-up and making ground again over the mile last time.
A better draw gives Starwalker the chance to settle more neutrally as he reaches his preferred distance range, while Chanelle Cooper takes 2kg off after riding a Belmont double last Saturday.
Caulfield Roughie Tip
Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 9 House Of Lords
Several of the market elects have been racing for a while, which could leave the door open for a fresher runner such as House Of Lords at a much bigger price.
Although she ended autumn with a staying victory, the lightly raced six-year-old has also been effective over shorter trips, winning two of three attempts at seven furlongs including first-up at Sale last season.
Her latest fresh run came over this distance at Pakenham on March 6, where she was given a difficult task from the rear but still finished off encouragingly.
House Of Lords has three wins on Good ground, two from three on Soft and a second from her only Heavy start, while the drop to 54kg gives her an each-way chance with some luck in transit.
Doomben Roughie Tip
Doomben Roughie - Race 9 No. 9 Slippin' Jimmy
Slippin' Jimmy was allowed to find his feet from a tricky alley when resuming at Eagle Farm on July 25, and his effort from the rear was better than the finishing position suggests.
He receives a significant turnaround at the weights here, dropping to 51.5kg after Stacey Callow’s claim and meeting market elect Hell 3kg better from their first-up clash.
The son of Pariah owns an excellent overall record of eight wins and five placings from 22 starts, with his latest Saturday metropolitan success coming at Doomben when leading throughout under an apprentice.
Barrier one gives Callow the chance to have him much closer second-up and, while usually better deeper into a campaign, Slippin' Jimmy has won at this stage before and is a genuine blowout chance in the finale.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 8 No. 11 Gazelle
Gazelle showed promise without winning during her first campaign, but the four placings she recorded have been followed by clear improvement this preparation.
She opened with a dominant maiden victory at Mount Gambier before an eye-catching Murray Bridge second, then returned to that circuit and secured career win number two third-up on July 7.
Her first attempt in Saturday metropolitan company came on July 18, where she settled a long way back and was one of only two runners making meaningful late ground, recording the second-fastest final 200m in a race that has already produced three subsequent winners.
Freshened since and dropping back in distance, Gazelle should receive a genuine tempo and can potentially settle closer this time, making the double-figure quote appealing on an each-way basis.
Rosehill Roughie Tip
Rosehill Roughies - Race 3 No. 1 Tom Vegas & No. 13 Winning Emotions
Tom Vegas and Winning Emotions are two double-figure chances worth considering in Saturday’s Highway, with the former returning off an encouraging Bathurst trial victory on July 28.
Tom Vegas gets 3kg relief through Jacob Stiff and, aside from his Country Championships Final failure on a Soft 7 and some Group assignments, has done little wrong, including a Mudgee Country Championships Qualifier win in February and several encouraging fresh performances.
Winning Emotions has race fitness on her side and tumbles to 52.5kg after Molly Fitzgerald’s claim, having also started shorter in the market in her previous two Highway appearances at Rosehill.
She had little luck in the latest of those and can be forgiven for her August 1 effort after being dragged back from a wide barrier, with the mare still finishing off reasonably and capable of producing a strong late burst with more favours.
