Saturday Racing Tips - August 15
Best Bet
Caulfield Race 5 No. 3 Closer To Free
The lightly-raced three-year-old from the Danny O’Brien stable returns to the scene where he finished a brave second in the Blue Diamond Stakes in the Autumn.
After trialling like a jet after the Diamond, it was a horror show in the Golden Slipper and a complete forgive run.
A push button horse who will burn the candle at both ends, he looks to get a nice set up in a small field of nine.
The 1100 metre mark at Caulfield gives Jockey Mark Zahra time to bring him across and look to dictate the speed or sit outside.
With a gloomy forecast for Saturday, I think the outside draw might work in his favour and he could be too slick for his rivals first up.
Next Best
Rosehill Race 8 No. 10 Castillo King
Although in midweek grade at Warwick Farm, the colt by Farnan suggested he has a strong future ahead of him after an effortless win on debut.
It was a performance which was backed up by the clock and he still wanted to run about over the concluding stages.
A tick over trial in between suggests Michael Freedman is genuine about his chances in a logical rise in grade.
It is an interesting edition of the Rosebud this year with perhaps the stronger two-year-olds of the Autumn bypassing the race, but it means a perfect opportunity for a talented up and comer to prove himself at listed level in only his second start.
Tommy Berry stays on and, from gate 12 in a sizeable field, he can be patient and wait for the breaks. If he brings his turn of foot he showed on debut, he can well and truly measure up here.
Each-Way
Caulfield Race 7 No. 2 Evaporate
Lindsay Park have a terrific record in this race through Mr Brightside and Gentleman Roy.
If there’s a horse who deserves a Group race after a consistent Autumn, look no further than this bloke.
Two thirds and a second early in the prep behind the likes of Jimmysstar, Tom Kitten and Autumn Glow suggest this is a target race first up.
With a potential deteriorating track, the wide draw gives Blake Shinn options and he may well end up being the map horse here.
With two wins and two seconds from five rides, Shinn has proven to have a great association with the horse.
He likes the sting out of the track and if any runner is going to beat him, he’s certainly going to make them earn it. Super tough and looks a nice each way play around $6.00.
Value
Rosehill Race 10 No. 4 Mr. Verse
The lightly raced five-year-old gelding returns to Rosehill where he was enormous five starts ago from the back.
He’s been competing in stronger company in Melbourne late last year and was good through the line first up down the straight over the sprint distance.
The rise in trip, drop in grade and an advantageous draw allows Kerrin McEvoy to give the horse every chance.
He’s one win and a placing from two second up starts and a fantastic strike rate of four wins and three minor placings from just 11 starts overall.
At around $10, represents fantastic value and well worth a play in last on the card.
Place Multi
Mr Verse (Rosehill Race 10) & Warnie (Caulfield Race 8)
Around $6.50 for these two to run a hole.
