We’re only a week away from the Winx Stakes, the first Group 1 of the season, and Rosehill stages a strong Saturday program on August 15 highlighted by The Rosebud.

Conditions will need to be monitored on race day, with the track potentially starting at a Good 4 before forecast rain arrives on Saturday.

Looking for odds on the upcoming majors? The Group 1 Futures Markets detail all of the action, including the Winx Stakes and Memsie Stakes, which are both contested in August.

Rosehill Roughies - Race 3 No. 1 Tom Vegas & No. 13 Winning Emotions

Among the contenders at double-figure quotes for Saturday’s Highway at Rosehill are Tom Vegas and Winning Emotions.

The returning Tom Vegas gets some nice relief at the weights after Jacob Stiff’s 3kg claim and arrives here off an encouraging Bathurst trial win on July 28.

Any further rain would probably be a query based on his Country Championships Final failure on a Soft 7, but if you take out that run and his Group assignments during his three-year-old season, the four-year-old has done little wrong, highlighted by a Mudgee Country Championships Qualifier victory on February 21.

Winning Emotions brings race fitness and could be dangerous dropping sharply in the weights to 52.5kg after Molly Fitzgerald’s claim, having also started shorter in the market in two Highway attempts at Rosehill in February and June.

She was a little unlucky in the latest of those and her August 1 run here can be forgiven after being dragged back from a wide draw, with Winning Emotions finishing off reasonably under the circumstances and she's capable of producing a strong finish when conditions allow.

Asahi Super Dry Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Rosehill Best Bet - Race 7 No. 5 Hawker Hall

A tidy record continues to build for Hawker Hall, with the Kris Lees-trained sprinter recording six wins and four placings from 14 starts.

That includes a first-up victory at Randwick on July 25 following some sharp trial work, with the performance better than the final margin suggests after he was unable to enjoy an easy time in front following an early speed battle.

Hawker Hall was comfortably the pick of the on-speed runners, including the talented Ice Kool, while the second and third both came from off the pace, including runner-up Istolea Merc, who had every chance to pounce late and meets him again here.

This second-up setup looks even more favourable from a low draw in a field with less pressure, allowing James McDonald to potentially lead and dictate after partnering the gelding for his past two victories, including an all-the-way win on Magic Millions Day over 1200m.

A second-up Rosehill winner last campaign and proven in all conditions, including a dominant Heavy 8 maiden victory, Hawker Hall gets the right map to run this race to suit himself and is well placed to bring up win number seven.

TAB Rosebud Tips (Race 8)

Rosehill Feature Bets - Race 8 No. 3 Central Europe & No. 15 Royal Exile

The Rosebud headlines the program and this Listed event should provide an important form reference for the three-year-olds heading into spring, with several resuming runners including Central Europe.

The Chris Waller-trained colt was only a pimple away from winning the Skyline Stakes on debut on February 28, with stablemate Campione D’Italia prevailing before flashing home in the Golden Slipper and subsequently winning the Group 1 Inglis Sires’.

Central Europe was still competitive when beaten a length into third at start two before a spell, while the son of Frankel has caught the eye late in both winter trials ahead of his return.

At longer odds is Royal Exile, with Jenny Graham boasting a couple of smart youngsters in her small team and this son of King’s Legacy among them after a competitive Sydney appearance in the Inglis Millennium and an impressive return during the Grafton Carnival.

Royal Exile has also bolted in with a tick-over trial since that first-up performance and, from a low draw with a light weight, he could surprise some better-fancied rivals who may be working towards bigger targets later in the spring.

Racing And Sports Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Rosehill Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 11 Althoff

Plenty of eyes will be on the resuming Attica, with the Godolphin representative gelded ahead of this campaign after failing to come up during an autumn preparation that became more disappointing as it progressed.

He showed plenty of promise as an early three-year-old, winning three of four starts last spring including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m, and while his recent trials have been sound, he is likely to improve over more ground deeper into the preparation.

Althoff may not possess the same level of talent, but in terms of a winning setup he ticks plenty of boxes on Saturday with a run under the belt, a softer draw and 7kg less than the top weight.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding also arrives off an excellent Rosehill return on August 1, where he was forced back over 1300m and peeled wide in the straight before producing the fastest final 400m of the entire meeting in a race dominated by Carbonados.

The extra 100m suits and so does the booking of in-form jockey Zac Lloyd, who can potentially have Althoff settling a little closer from barrier four.

Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap Tips (Race 10)

Rosehill Favourite - Race 10 No. 10 Tarzing

There may have been a minor setback with Tarzing after five weeks between runs following his second-up victory over this track-and-trip, where he got the better of the handy Big Papa.

His August 1 outing suggested the gelding needed the run and he also had few favours, with a wide draw forcing James McDonald back before making a sweeping move around the field.

That is always difficult to do at Rosehill, particularly when still building fitness, and the performance can be forgiven with the son of Tarzino expected to strip fitter.

It was also the first time Tarzing had finished outside the placings, having recorded three wins and two seconds from his first five starts after returning to Sydney following two impressive Victorian victories over summer.

Still putting it all together and likely to get to a mile as the campaign progresses, Tarzing draws more favourably in gate seven and McDonald should be able to have him a few pairs closer with cover, giving the gelding every chance to atone in the Rosehill finale.
