Doomben Favourite - Race 1 No. 3 Thats Archies Girl

Ben Thompson was in hot form throughout July with 23 winners at a strike rate of 30% and has carried that touch into August with another 10 winners so far this month at 29%.

He takes the reins on Thats Archies Girl, who technically stays in the same grade third-up but finds what looks an easier assignment than the August 1 contest where she worked home for third behind the flying Grinzinger Champ.

That 1200m effort followed a 1050m return at Toowoomba, a trip that was on the short side for the daughter of Per Incanto, although she still arguably should have won that July 18 resumption.

This is her first attempt beyond 1300m since joining the Nick Keal yard and the rise in distance looks suitable, with the mare having previously shown seven-furlong credentials under the Hayes stable in Victoria, albeit in weaker company.

Thats Archies Girl has been consistent for her new connections and, while this remains an open race, she gets a good opportunity to put a metropolitan win on the board.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 12 Lockyer

A back-to-back winner over this track-and-trip last winter, Lockyer was then thrown into some much stronger company during a short summer campaign.

He was not up to the mark there, including when contesting a Group 3 won by the very smart Ninja, before connections opted to spell and geld the son of I Am Invincible ahead of a winter return that produced a good effort at a big price in Listed grade.

There were excuses at both Ipswich and Doomben in his next two outings, while he appeared to have every chance when narrowly touched off fourth-up on July 25, although he was exposed a little early.

That race has already produced two subsequent winners, including Golden Cross, who received 3kg from Lockyer and franked the form with a BM78 victory at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

Blinkers go on, he is hard fit and this is a thin race, so it is close to D-day for Lockyer, while Artful Persuasion and Queensland debutant Entrusting are the two bigger-priced runners who could provide some opposition.

XXXX Class 6 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Doomben Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Just Flying

An honest galloper from the Robert Heathcote yard, Just Flying has finished outside the placings only once in five Doomben appearances, with his sole course victory coming in an all-the-way success over this distance in February last year.

Another metropolitan win followed at Eagle Farm early last season, while after placing three of his last four Brisbane runs in autumn, he was given a short break after a Warwick Farm appearance on May 20.

Both winter runs since that Sydney trip suggest the son of Star Turn is working towards win number six, with little expected when he resumed over 1350m on July 18 but still produced the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m of the entire program.

He then finished third in a handy BM85 on August 1 while again recording the fastest final 400m of the race, and with a distance run now under the belt there should be further improvement to come.

This Class 6 is a touch easier overall and looks very winnable, with main market danger North Pole held safely by Just Flying a fortnight ago and now meeting him 1kg worse at the weights.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 9 No. 9 Slippin' Jimmy

After a cold ride when allowed to find his feet from a tricky draw, Slippin' Jimmy’s July 25 return was a pass mark.

The gelding drops sharply in the weights to 51.5kg after Stacey Callow’s claim, which is 7.5kg less than he carried fresh, while he also meets market elect Hell 3kg better from that Eagle Farm clash where both were resuming.

The son of Pariah has built a tidy overall record of eight wins and five placings from 22 starts, with his latest Saturday metropolitan victory coming at Doomben early last season when leading throughout under a 3kg apprentice.

Although he may appreciate slightly further as the campaign progresses, barrier one gives Callow the option to settle much closer this time around and the six-year-old is proven on both Good and Soft ground.

Slippin' Jimmy is generally at his best deeper into a preparation, but he does have a second-up victory over this distance on the resume and, with more favours this time, he's a blowout chance in the finale.
