Melbourne continues its build towards the spring on Saturday with a nine-race card at Caulfield, headlined by the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes.

Caulfield Favourite - Race 2 No. 4 Simurgh

Even if not fully screwed down for Saturday’s BM78 return, Simurgh would want to be taking care of this field if he is to progress as a Hayes Cups contender over the spring.

The import is up in the weights following a terrific four-run first Australian campaign, which opened with an eye-catching second over the mile at Pakenham before back-to-back wins over this track-and-trip in May.

He was perhaps just looking for a break when picked off late in his hat-trick attempt at Sandown on June 13, narrowly going down over 2400m to Straand Deal, who was in excellent touch at the time.

Two Flemington jump-outs have prepared Simurgh for this return and, while 800m was always going to prove far too sharp in the latest on August 3, his work past the line was encouraging.

Craig Williams retains the ride and last season’s leading Melbourne jockey has a perfect two-from-two record aboard the gelding, with both of those previous Caulfield victories also coming on rain-affected ground.

There could be a few fresher horses capable of challenging market elects Duchess Of Zoe, Ten Commandments, Elouyou and He’ll Rip, who have all been up for a little while and may not have much upside left.

Mr Verse is one each-way contender after a terrific 1200m return at Flemington, while House Of Lords is at an even bigger price despite potentially looking for further later in the campaign.

The six-year-old rounded out autumn with a victory over a staying trip but has also proven effective over shorter distances, winning two of three attempts at seven furlongs including a first-up success at Sale early last season.

Her latest resumption came over this distance at Pakenham on March 6, where she was set a big task from the rear but still worked home encouragingly.

House Of Lords has performed across all surfaces, with three wins on Good ground, two victories from three Soft-track attempts and a runner-up finish from her sole Heavy outing, while the lightly raced mare drops to just 54kg and could surprise with some luck in transit.

Quayclean Quezette Stakes Tips (Race 6)

Caulfield Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Natural Fling

A big field has been assembled for the Group 3 Quezette Stakes, a fillies feature that has regularly produced strong form going forward.

Recent winners include I Am A Star, Bella Nipotina and Charm Stone, who all progressed to Group 1 success, while three-time Group 1-winning sprinter Sunlight also features on the honour roll from the past decade and she was trained by Tony McEvoy.

The McEvoy yard prepares this year’s favourite Natural Fling, who bolted in on debut over this track-and-trip in May before heading north for the Magic Millions National 2YO Classic.

She found only The Next Episode too good there, with that smart colt arriving off a Listed victory and now among the early market elects for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, giving Natural Fling a strong form reference.

The trip away should have brought her on and her winter jump-out work has been sound, including an August 3 Flemington heat win when allowed to stride in a good rhythm under Damian Lane, who has this fresh engagement.

Evergreen Turf Regal Roller Stakes Tips (Race 8)

Caulfield Best Bet - Race 8 No. 6 Persian Spirit

On a difficult program to find a standout, Persian Spirit appeals as a strong each-way contender in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes, which runs as the penultimate on Saturday’s tricky Caulfield card.

Is he more effective over seven furlongs? Probably, but the Symon Wilde-trained galloper has shown plenty of versatility over different distances, including an 1100m first-up victory last spring.

His 2026 campaign also began over 1100m in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield, where he recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the race, showing he possesses enough speed to let down strongly over shorter trips.

The 1200m looks a suitable starting point following two good winter jump-outs, while a genuine tempo should come from Mcgaw, Shadhavar and Arkansaw Kid pushing forward along with outside pressure from Zou Sensation and Recommendation.

Persian Spirit needs some luck given his racing pattern, but a smaller field should bring his turn-of-foot into play and he could be dangerous late under Harry Coffey, who has partnered him for his past four wins.

Toby Newton Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Caulfield Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 13 Darkbonee

This could be the right time for Darkbonee to test himself against some classier opposition, with Light Infantry Man, Berkeley Square, Machine Gun Gracie and Just Folk among the main dangers.

Just Folk is the fittest of that quartet and more than capable on his day, but those runners are all high in the weights, including Light Infantry Man resuming with 60kg even after the claim.

Darkbonee drops to the 53kg minimum, a whopping 8.5kg less than he carried in an excellent Flemington return on August 1, where he maintained his perfect top-three record of three wins and six placings from nine starts.

Should he stretch to 2000m later in the campaign, the son of Palentino could develop into a handy prospect for the stronger country cups over spring, with something like the Ballarat Cup potentially within range if he stays up that long.

Tactically versatile and possessing a turn-of-foot, the five-year-old has Jamie Melham aboard second-up, with Melham returning from a short break after a quiet early winter period, and she'll be eager to find form ahead of the spring.
