ASCOT
Race 1 - Double Spice (sixth): From a kinder draw this gelding goes close, with Double Spice working three-wide throughout, yet still comfortably outperformed the two leaders. Hit the front briefly approaching the 200m before understandably tiring late, although was only beaten three lengths. Was six weeks between runs here, so should only improve off this.
Race 5 - Come Right Back (fifth): Honest stayer from the Adam Durrant yard who is crying out for 2000m+ now and fourth-up via the Scahill Cup (2100m, Nov 26) he may well find his race next start. A tiring Baramagic wasn't able to take cart him further in this 1800m affair, where although he lacked the turn-of-foot of the first four, he stuck to the task well.
CRANBOURNE
Race 2 - Dunkel (second): In a race run to suit those on the speed, it was an enormous effort from this gelding to get as close as he did at just start two. He produced the fastest last 400m and 200m of the program on a day where times were electric, so that goes to show the ability that this son of Dundeel has. The SA Derby will be a nice target over late autumn.
Race 4 - Greece (Second): Had she found the front from the inside gate and not been restrained to the leader’s heels, then we could have seen a different result. She was not given the opportunity to build through her gears and kick off the bend whereas the winner was ridden beautifully and given full momentum. This filly is classy and I am convinced that both first and second are stakes class.
DOOMBEN
Race 1 - Abounding (third): Although average in terms of expected result vs her SP, she was still quite good on debut coming home from last in the small field in a race where the leader skipped away and most just held their spot. The filly is by Rich Enuff and she just looks in need of more ground than the 1050m on offer, so next start in maiden company over 1200m will suit.
Race 6 - Count Da Beans (sixth): This three-year-old gelding was coming into this event off the back of defeats at $2 and $1.80, and did start $1.75 in this, but simply had zero luck and should have won by lengths. Unable to be ridden out for the entire straight, we can expect that he backs up rather quickly and in the same grade next start, expect to see a deserved win next to his name.
NEWCASTLE
Race 3 - Chase My Crown (fifth): Despite a very low rating, this was worth a look and had she drawn a gate, it would've been interesting, with Chase My Crown dragged right back early and made late ground in a race where the first two home had the best runs. She has a metro rating of 60 and is still Highway eligible, so there's much easier options around.
Race 8 - Brutality (ninth): Over shorter trips, Brutality has been getting home well all prep and with a nom for The Gong this Sat, he'll follow a very familiar pattern, with this Joe Pride gelding having his last three races on the seven-day turnaround, which have all been with the blinkers on and all have come deep into the campaign. Crying out for 1600m now.
