Ascot Roughie - Race 1 No. 6 Art Session

One at an each-way price in a competitive opener is Art Session, who bolted in with a trial win at Lark Hill that was the fastest 950m heat of the November 17 set.

The four-year-old only finished outside the money once last prep, which was an end-of-prep seventh on soft ground when he’d had enough.

He opened that campaign with a second at Belmont when splitting a useful pair in Repossession and Kay Tee Why, which is solid form for this.

He then followed up with a Pinjarra win over Desert Whisper, a mare who won three of her next four in Saturday company, and those form lines read well with this galloper returning to his preferred 1000m trip.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 3 Chicago Blues

Chicago Blues was in the market for a country two-year-old affair on debut, but after leading he tired late and was well beaten, which ended that first prep quickly.

Following a spell, the gelding returned with a breakthrough victory at Kilmore on October 31, showing the benefit of time and maturity.

He then contested a Caulfield Heath BM64 and, despite going around at long odds, he still should’ve finished closer after being shuffled back at a key stage and held up until the 150m.

He picked up late to find the line for third, and a wide draw from the chute start isn’t a big issue here, with extra galloping room early potentially helping him cross at his own leisure.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 6 No. 1 Ser Joh

The main query would be any further track downgrades, although he didn’t fail on a Soft 7 second-up on November 15 when supported at a price.

That came after what was effectively a barrier-trial first-up at Eagle Farm on October 18, where he got right back and produced the fastest closing sectionals of the card.

A big horse that’s still lightly raced, he worked through the grades nicely in the first half of the year and continues to progress.

With this being a decent drop in class, he can be in the mix with conditions to suit.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 4 No. 11 Shalhavmusik

Shalhavmusik is up against some more progressive types, although it’s still only a Class 1 and she’s now hard-fit with three runs under the belt.

Her second-up breakthrough wasn’t convincing at a short price, but it was tough, and she has been competitive in all three spring attempts.

There were some excuses at Gawler last start when beaten just over half a length in fourth, with the first three home finding the faster lanes.

A positive ride puts her right in this, and she’s the type that can stick on at a price.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 10 No. 13 Hyperbolic

Connections have opted against a BM72 option at Canterbury on Friday night, and this BM78 against her own sex shapes as a suitable second-up assignment.

The race has opened right up following the scratching of Frosty Girl, who was going to start an odds-on favourite and would have dominated the market.

Her return was better than it reads, with Hyperbolic settling back in an on-speed-dominated race and working home fairly well without threatening.

That was only the second time she has finished outside the top four in 11 starts, and she draws kinder here for an in-form Brad Widdup yard operating at five winners from its last 15 runners.
