This week’s roughies focus on resumers with strong trial form, horses dropping into more suitable grades and others who map to get favourable runs, giving punters appealing options at odds.
Ascot Roughie Tip
Ascot Roughie - Race 5 No. 8 Charino
Charino produced a nice November 3 trial when finishing second in a solid Lark Hill heat, suggesting he’s returned in good order.
He now resumes over the Ascot 1000m, the same track-and-trip where he caused an upset in the Max Simmonds Stakes at just his second start last spring.
He didn’t go on with it in three autumn runs but wasn’t beaten far in any of them, and this 66+ looks slightly easier than what he contested in that period.
With barrier one and a small field to help him hold a spot, he finds a very suitable race at each-way odds.
Caulfield Roughie Tip
Caulfield Roughie - Race 10 No. 14 Somewhere
Somewhere showed real promise 12 months ago when bolting in on debut before flashing home for third in the Sandown Guineas, a race he arguably should have won.
He failed to fire in his three autumn appearances but has been given time, and his two jump outs this prep have both been sound without being asked for much.
There’s still a query based on the last campaign, but the raw talent he showed as a three-year-old makes him a genuine improver on return.
A deep Benchmark 84 ensures a price, and he’s the type who could surprise fresh at longer odds.
Doomben Roughie Tip
Doomben Roughie - Race 9 No. 9 Thankyou Henry
Thankyou Henry disappointed last start when in the market at Eagle Farm, but a slow post-race recovery was noted and offers clear forgiveness.
Blinkers are applied to sharpen him up and he has an excellent overall profile at Doomben, placing in three of four runs and unlucky in the other.
He’s better than what he has shown in two runs this season, and he gets small positives here with a softer draw and 2kg less to carry.
Back to his preferred track, he shapes as a worthwhile roughie with upside.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 4 No. 4 Stirrup Cup
Stirrup Cup drops back in grade after being no threat behind Air Assault, who dominated that November 4 event from the front.
He had finished runner-up to the same horse the start prior in the Gawler Cup, and that effort reads far better for this level.
Fourth-up suits him nicely and his winter form, including seconds behind Sav On Ice, ties in strongly for this assignment.
He’s capable of improving sharply at each-way odds and looks one of the more appealing value options on a thin card.
Newcastle Roughie Tip
Newcastle Roughie - Race 10 No. 12 Just Party
Just Party draws wide but Newcastle’s long run-in often offsets that disadvantage, though feature days can occasionally play differently.
He’s prepared by a stable known for producing strong fresh performers, and he tends to show his best early in a prep.
His resuming run in May, when gelded ahead of that return and just missing in the Hawkesbury Guineas, was outstanding and has since been strongly franked.
At a generous price late in the day, he makes solid roughie appeal in a race that should be run to suit.
