Last updated: Fri 01 May 2026 09:25

Saturday's racing features value roughie tips across multiple Australian venues, highlighting overlooked contenders with strong credentials and recent performances. Maalis Song (Ascot), Sought After (Bendigo), Splash Back (Eagle Farm), World Alliance (Hawkesbury), and Common Interest (Morphettville) represent smart each-way bets. These runners bring recent form or proven fresh records and can offer punters a chance at bigger returns. Bettors should check scratchings and conditions, as several of these picks are drawn to improve on recent efforts in their respective races.

Saturday’s racing offers value across every metro card, with several runners flying under the radar on a strong national program.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 9 No. 11 Maalis Song

Leading the market for the last is Too Darn Stormy, while each-way odds are available for Maalis Song, who beat that rival fair and square when resuming on April 1.

He wasn’t able to go on with it when stepping up in grade a fortnight ago, but he was also set a big task from back in the field.

The gelding still recorded the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m of that event, and getting to seven furlongs could suit now third-up.

This time around, jockey Laqdar Ramoly has gate two at his disposal and will need to be more positive early, while Superfluous is one at long odds to consider after a fourth-of-11 finish in the same April 1 race.

Bendigo Roughie Tip

Bendigo Roughie - Race 6 No. 13 Sought After

The gelding hasn’t shown the tactical speed to use a good draw anyway, and while he’ll need favours with the track pattern, he can find his feet early with galloping room on this big Bendigo circuit.

The four-year-old didn’t have much go right in his Caulfield resumption on April 4.

His best Australian run was recorded at this track second-up in the spring, when getting home from third after overcoming some trouble.

That event was won by Harry’s Yacht, who has since won three races in stronger company, and after contesting The Meteorite behind Jigsaw, he was far from disgraced and can measure up here with 4kg less.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 8 No. 13 Splash Back

It’s hard to know what to make of the two favourites, as they are probably both running a second behind Private Harry if he’s right.

The two-run prep earlier in the season was uninspiring, and so was the latest trial at Canterbury.

On the second line of betting is Lady Of Camelot, a genuine type who hasn’t raced since March 2025.

At a price, Splash Back has claims after a luckless return in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes, where she recorded the second-fastest last 400m of the April 11 card.

Hawkesbury Roughie Tip

Hawkesbury Roughie - Race 9 No. 16 World Alliance

Needing one more scratching to make the final field for the Hawkesbury XXXX Gold Rush is World Alliance.

Not always the easiest horse to catch, but the son of Rubick has a big finish when conditions allow.

Still lightly raced for a six-year-old, the gelding brings an excellent fresh record, with three first-up wins and a third from four attempts.

There are also proven Hawkesbury references, and while he failed at this meeting last year on a Heavy track, subsequent winter and early spring form was consistent.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 4 Common Interest

Common Interest is a knockout chance in the Adelaide Guineas for the Jolly stable.

A confidence boost came at Murray Bridge last start when dropping in grade, where galloping room allowed him to build through the gears over 1400m.

This is tougher, but the gelding is progressive and nothing went right in his first two autumn runs, which were better than they read.

Ability was evident in the first prep, and there were clear excuses when pulling up lame on November 15, so there’s upside at odds here.
