Saturday’s feature racing programs present several strong roughie plays around the country, with a number of runners overlooked in betting despite bringing proven form references into key assignments.

Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 4 No. 2 Magnique

While she has been competitive in three 1200m attempts, keeping Magnique at five furlongs looks more favourable.

From 11 tries over this distance, the daughter of Magnus has recorded three wins and six seconds.

After placing behind the smart Smooth Chino when second-up, she produced a strong closing fourth in November when returning to 1000m.

There appears plenty in her favour on Saturday and Magnique arrives off a soft Belmont trial win on April 28, where she safely held off Long Service Leave, a talented youngster who won two of four starts in his first campaign.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 9 No. 5 Southern Prince

Accidental Bid is one of the strongest winning chances on the program and we’re happy to be with him, while Southern Prince also appeals at a big each-way quote in the last at Doomben.

The gelding was a touch plain second-up in Sydney, although not disgraced, and perhaps the effort was understandable after covering ground first-up.

Southern Prince progressed nicely through spring after resuming gelded following his two-year-old season.

That campaign opened with back-to-back victories before a strong closing effort in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over this distance.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 8 No. 1 Title Fighter

Admittedly it came with much less weight and at bolter’s odds, although Title Fighter won this race last year off the same Wangoom Stakes lead-up.

The five-year-old appears to be going even better this time around despite running into the smart Olivanaotherday in this year’s Wangoom.

Title Fighter still stuck on fairly in Heavy conditions there after another encouraging effort first-up in the Hareeba Stakes at Mornington.

The references through Desert Lightning and Recon now read strongly back against benchmark opposition in this year’s Straight Six.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 8 No. 13 Acappella Moon

The Hannah Bryce-trained mare was set far too big a task on May 2.

The five-year-old never threatened after settling back and wide throughout, which was against the pattern of the meeting.

Despite that, Acappella Moon still produced the second-fastest final 400m and 200m sectionals of the BM76 contest.

The highlight came with a February 28 victory on the Parks track and she showed there that a low draw can be used, with barrier three providing more tactical options in the penultimate.

Scone Roughie Tip

Scone Roughie - Race 7 No. 13 Gorgeous

Gorgeous is still looking to put things together on race day and there is little doubt ability is the issue.

The daughter of So You Think was also set a big task when beaten as a short-priced favourite first-up at Hawkesbury.

A nose roll has since been applied and the filly returned to the trials with a Randwick hit-out on May 4.

she justified a short quote via a Super Maiden triumph on debut before a spell, despite covering ground and still doing plenty wrong throughout that Randwick Kensington victory.
