Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 10 No. 13 Our Mate Archie

It was a bizarre resumption, where Our Mate Archie was dragged back early from a wide draw and simply never looked interested after losing rhythm mid-race.

The second-up showing was far more encouraging when working early to be put on the speed and whacked away honestly in fifth without threatening.

There’s a platform to spike now, especially with a 1400m run completed, while after drawing out in the October attempts, he now has a soft gate.

The lightly raced five-year-old was very consistent throughout his first season and could improve sharply third-up.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 9 No. 1 Miss Joelene

She got a much-deserved black-type win here over 2100m before spell, which capped off a very consistent season.

The main query is that there’s so many here right down in the weights, but double-figure odds for the proven class runner of the field seems generous.

Miss Joelene has four wins and two seconds from six first-up attempts and rarely lets punters down fresh.

She landed good bets when saluting fresh in April before just missing in a Listed affair, and off a good trial in a decent heat, looks set to run well again.

Flemington Roughie Tip

Flemington Roughie - Race 9 No. 11 Sweethearted

Champions Day rounds out with Sweethearted, who looks a solid each-way chance second-up.

He resumed at Caulfield on Guineas Day and was unsuited there, settling back and wide before looming into it late when condition gave out.

Still lightly raced with only eight starts, Sweethearted showed promise with back-to-back wins last summer and had little go his way in autumn.

That prep included a Flemington run where he produced the fastest last 400m of the meeting, and those autumn form lines read well for this level.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 9 No. 2 Howl

He’s never been the easiest catch, but Howl is a very capable sprinter when right and has competed in much stronger company.

The gelding looked sharp via an October 30 jump-out ahead of his stable debut for Tracy Cox, who knows him well from the Jolly yard.

He showed that turn-of-foot last autumn when running fifth fresh, and we only go back to last spring for a win in this benchmark with 3kg more.

Howl could easily chime in here at long odds if he brings that same finishing burst.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 7 No. 4 Pounce

Pounce is on Australian debut and has worked nicely in her two Sydney trials leading in.

She drew wide in the Five Diamonds Prelude on October 25 and was scratched from that engagement, which looks a deliberate call to save her for this.

If she wasn’t ready, Pounce could’ve easily been sent around there for a hit-out, so the fact she wasn’t suggests the stable didn't want to waste the fresh run.

Straight to 1400m looks suitable, and with the favourites potentially vulnerable, she’s an each-way quote in this fresh assignment,
