The 2022 Victoria Derby is the three-year-old classic of the Melbourne Spring Carnival races, run over 2500m at Flemington.

Spring Champion Stakes winner Sharp N Smart (barrier three) was too tough for Elliptical last week, now ready to come to Victoria and tackle the best from down this way.

Moonee Valley Vase winner Berkeley Square (barrier five) looks one of the main chances, but just needs to run the trip while Mr Maestro (barrier 17) has not put a foot wrong this prep and can win.

Pericles (barrier six) is lightly raced, but looks to be the most progressive in the event, but it will be just a matter of whether he runs the 2500m journey.

Muramasa (barrier four), Distrustful Award (barrier 12) and Kings Crossing (barrier 16) are the next best in the staying event.

Victoria Derby Winners

A large part of the fabric of Melbourne racing, the Victoria Derby was first run and in 1855 by Rose Of May and the race has gone from strength-to-strength ever since.

The immortal Phar Lap was a winner in 1929, Dulcify took out the event 1978 and in more recent times Extra Brut took out the Derby before being sold to Hong Kong.

Worth $2 million, the Victoria Derby is the feature race on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which runs for four total race days over the course of a week.

These days the event doesn't draw the absolute cream of the crop like it previously did but the huge prize money on offer will ensure the fields are competitive for years to come.
