ATP Gstaad Futures Tips & Predictions

One of three ATP 250 tournaments taking place this week on European clay, the Swiss Open in Gstaad is a good spot to find some value post-Wimbledon, where most of the top players are resting up for the upcoming North American hardcourt swing.

Two big names headline this draw, but Casper Ruud at $2.30 and defending champion Alexander Bublik at $6.00 don't offer enough value for me.

Ruud is the obvious favourite, with the Norwegian always a strong shout to pick up the scraps at these weaker 250 events, but he's actually not won a title during this stage of the season since 2022, losing in the quarter-finals of Gstaad last year.

Meanwhile, Bublik's form has dropped off from last year, where he was in career-best touch and went on to win multiple titles during this period.

I'm steering clear of both. Gstaad is located at 1,050 metres above sea level in the Swiss Alps, which means the ball flies through the air quicker and control off the ground is paramount.

These conditions tend to suit big servers and I'm liking the look of a few value selections, which can be found further down the page.

ATP Gstaad Outright Winner Best Bets

Raphael Collignon

Collignon is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 42 and has been impressive over the last 12 months. He has a huge game and the altitude conditions should suit him.

The Belgian has a positive 11-9 record at tour-level and I think he would be pushing on the door of the top 20 if not for a couple of niggling injuries that have hindered his progress at various stages throughout the year.

The 24-year-old made two Challenger finals on clay this season before upsetting Ben Shelton on his way to the third round of Roland Garros, where it took an inspired Matteo Arnaldi to edge him out in a fifth set tiebreak, with the Italian going on to make the semi-finals.

Collignon also played Alexander Zverev tough in a quarter-final exit in Halle before a difficult first round draw at Wimbledon against Arthur Fils.

We often see breakthroughs at tour-level events at this stage of the season, with the likes of Pedro Cachin and Quentin Halys making the final in recent years. Collignon for me is strongly positioned to join them and has a decent little section, with the other seeded player - Valentin Vacherot - making his comeback from injury after not playing since the French Open.

Collignon might even face Yannik Hanfmann, who we will discuss soon, in the last eight.

Arthur Rinderknech

The big-serving Frenchman is always a good competitor, which I like in these sorts of smaller 250 events, where motivation of some players can be questionable.

Rinderknech is also yet to win an ATP title, so he should be going out all guns blazing in Gstaad, where the altitude should compliment his huge serve.

Recent form isn't anything to write home about, but Rinderknech did play well at Wimbledon, where he took Novak Djokovic to four sets in the third round, serving 70+ aces for the tournament.

Rinderknech also made the quarter-finals in Geneva just before the French Open, going down in a three-setter to Bublik, who is the defending champion here.

With an opening round bye as one of the top four seeds, Rinderknech could face a rematch with Bublik in the semi-finals and I think that matchup - on current form - would be close to 50-50, so the Frenchman holds some good value at $15 pre-tournament.

Yannick Hanfmann

The altitude specialist himself.

Hanfmann has made three ATP finals during his career and they've all come at altitude, including here in Gstaad in 2017. The others came nearby in Kitzbuhel in 2020 and earlier this season in Santiago.

The German simply loves these conditions, where his lethal serve flies through the air and his flat groundstrokes enjoy a bit more bite.

Hanfmann has a decent draw early, facing an out-of-form Pedro Martinez before Vacherot, who would be playing his first match since Roland Garros.

A quarter-final with our other pick Collignon would be an interesting tussle, with the winner potentially meeting Ruud in the semi-finals.

As mentioned at the start of the article, Ruud and Bublik are the obvious finalist picks, but I'm keen to have some small stakes on this trio to do some damage this week.
