Dolphins vs North Queensland Cowboys NRL Round 20 Tips - Origin Stars Spark Dolphins Response

The Dolphins are tipped to bounce back in Round 20 against the North Queensland Cowboys, thanks to the return of their key Origin players. After a historic loss, the strong lineup, especially Selwyn Cobbo, is expected to make a significant impact. The Dolphins have convincingly beaten the Cowboys in recent meetings, averaging over 42 points. The model suggests a close contest but gives the edge to the Dolphins, particularly with their improved squad. Selwyn Cobbo is recommended as the standout for multiple tries, and the Dolphins are tipped to cover the points spread.

Dolphins vs North Queensland Cowboys, Round 20 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Dolphins are backed to respond with their Origin stars returning, while Selwyn Cobbo looks primed for another multi-try performance against a Cowboys side they have dominated in recent meetings.

Last week’s 66-0 loss to Cronulla was the worst result in Dolphins history, but this is a very different team on paper. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jack Bostock and Selwyn Cobbo all return to a backline that lacked penetration in Redcliffe, while Thomas Flegler and Max Plath strengthen the middle.

Before their two Origin-affected losses, the Dolphins had won eight consecutive matches and established themselves as one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the competition. Their response should be immediate against a North Queensland side they have beaten in each of the last four meetings.

The Dolphins have scored freely in this matchup, averaging 42.25 points across those four victories. They posted 40 points against the Cowboys earlier this season, scored 43 and 58 in two meetings last year and also won 28-26 in Townsville in 2024. That history makes Dolphins Over 26.5 team points a strong attacking angle.

The model projects a much tighter contest, with the Dolphins winning by only 1.1 points against a market line of -3.5. However, the model is built on recent results that include two heavily disrupted performances during the Origin period. With their representative players returning, the home side should resemble the team that won eight straight rather than the one that was dismantled last weekend.

Selwyn Cobbo is the standout player prop. He has scored two or more tries in three of his last four club matches and returns after another strong Origin series. With the Cowboys conceding an average of 26.8 points across their last five matches, Cobbo should receive enough opportunities to threaten the line more than once.

  • The Dolphins won eight consecutive matches before their two Origin-affected defeats.
  • The Dolphins have won their last four games against North Queensland.
  • The Dolphins have averaged 42.25 points across those four victories.
  • Selwyn Cobbo has recorded 2+ tries in three of his last four club matches.

Head to Head

The Dolphins have taken control of this Queensland rivalry, winning five of the seven meetings between the clubs and each of the last four.

Their recent victories have become increasingly dominant. They beat North Queensland 40-14 earlier this season, won 43-24 at home last year and produced a remarkable 58-4 result in Townsville. The Cowboys’ only win from the last five meetings came in Round 1 of 2024, when they prevailed 43-18.

Across the last five meetings, the Dolphins hold a 4-1 record and an average winning margin of 15.2 points.

Dolphins Form Analysis

The Dolphins enter Round 20 under pressure after consecutive losses, including their historic 66-0 defeat to Cronulla. That performance was completely out of character for a side that had won eight straight before the Origin period disrupted its momentum and team continuity.

Their recent averages have understandably dropped, with the Dolphins scoring 24.4 points and conceding 27.0 across their last five. Those figures are heavily distorted by last week’s result, with the team still producing wins over the Warriors, Tigers and Roosters during the same stretch.

The return of Tabuai-Fidow, Bostock and Cobbo transforms the backline. Their speed and finishing ability should give Kodi Nikorima and Brad Schneider far more options in attack, while Flegler’s inclusion strengthens a forward pack that struggled to win field position against the Sharks.

The absence of Isaiya Katoa remains significant. The Dolphins have lacked organisation and short-kicking quality without their first-choice halfback, but this matchup may allow them to simplify their approach.

North Queensland Cowboys Form Analysis

North Queensland arrive with renewed confidence after back-to-back victories moved them into the top eight. They defeated Penrith 26-12 before producing a dramatic golden-point comeback against Manly, with Scott Drinkwater kicking the winning field goal in a 19-18 result.

Those wins have come after a difficult stretch in which the Cowboys lost three straight, including a 40-14 defeat to the Dolphins. Across their last five matches, North Queensland have averaged only 18.2 points while conceding 26.8, leaving them with an average margin of minus 8.6.

Drinkwater remains the key to their attack. He was heavily involved against Manly, while Braidon Burns has added finishing quality with another two-try performance. Tom Dearden is also listed among the reserves and could return from his syndesmosis injury, which would provide a major lift to their organisation and attacking polish.

The concern is their defence against this opponent. North Queensland have repeatedly struggled to contain the Dolphins’ speed on the edges and have conceded at least 40 points in each of their last three meetings.
