Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is searching for his first win in the Stradbroke Handicap and he prepares Antino (barrier 20) who is one of the main chances in Queenland's most prestigious race.

The five-year-old returned with win in the Victory Stakes on May 4 and he backed that up with a sixth-of-ten finish in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup, where ha made some inroads after settling at the rear.

A galloper who quickly worked through the grades over his first few campaigns, Antino was Group 1 placed over last year's Melbourne Spring Carnival and importantly, the son of Redwood has a terrific record at Eagle Farm (five wins and a third from seven attempts).

Vilana (barrier 4) has stormed into Stradbroke Handicap calculations following a dominant win in last Saturday's Moreton Cup and for this Group 1 attempt, the son of Hallowed Crown will carry 3kg less.

Godolphin have won this race previously with Impending (2017) and Trekking (2019) and now fourth-up after breaking a reasonable drought, there's a sense of timing with Vilana, who was gelded ahead of this campaign.

Bella Nipotina (barrier 21) has topweight of 56kg and the two-time Group 1 winner is in terrific form, having taken out the Doomben 10,000 before a narrow defeat in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Ciaron Maher also prepares Nugget (barrier 10), a galloper who has been competiive multiple times at Group 1 level and two of those have come in handicaps, which includes a fourth-of-nineteen finish two starts back in the Doncaster Mile.

Roll On High (barrier 13) bounced back to winning form last start when successful in the Fred Best Classic and the three-year-old plummets in the weights for the Stradbroke Handicap, where she carries 50kg.

1400m appears to be the sweet spot for the Victorian visitor, with all three career victories recorded over this trip and the subsequent form from her Desirable Stakes win last spring has been excellent.

A total of 18 runners (plus five emergencies) make up the final field for the 2024 Stradbroke Handicap.

Stradbroke Handicap Winners

The Stradbroke Handicap was first run in 1890 and has a famous history, with Rough Habit (two occasions), All Our Mob and Dane Ripper some of the greats to have won this feature.

The race has been over 1400m for much of its history, but in 2014 and 2015, it was run over 1350m at Doomben due to track renovations at Eagle Farm.

This Group 1 is one of the more famous handicaps on the Australian racing calendar and is considered to be Queenland's premier race.

Tofane (2021), Alligator Blood (2022) and Think About It (2023) have won the last three editions of the Stradbroke Handicap.
