France enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup as favorites, boasting exceptional squad depth and star players like Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. Despite their status, France face a challenging group—reminiscent of past upsets, including an opening match against Senegal. Legendary coach Didier Deschamps leads a talented squad in his final World Cup, aiming for redemption after narrowly losing to Argentina in 2022. While there's risk of a slow start, the team's firepower should carry them deep, possibly to the semifinals or beyond.

France World Cup 2026 Preview & Predictions

Equipped with supreme attacking depth and immense talent, France are one of the deserved favourites for the 2026 World Cup - but they've slipped up before and have landed in arguably the toughest group.

Could lightning strike twice for Les Bleus? France entered the 2002 World Cup as defending champions, but suffered a shock defeat to Senegal in their opening game before crashing out in the group stage.

Now, they face Senegal in their opening group game again. Of course, there's a chance France produce some scintillating football and crush all rivals, but they've got history of being a 'rocks or diamonds' team and while they could easily go all the way, there's plenty of potential banana skins along the way.

Read on below for our full preview of France's upcoming World Cup 2026 campaign.

France World Cup History

After years of underachieving, France broke through for a maiden World Cup one home soil in 1998 - but they crashed out of the 2002 tournament in South Korea/Japan in the group stage.

France also failed to qualify for the knockout phase in 2010 after making the final in 2006, losing to Italy. Didier Deschamps' side produced a brilliant tournament to win their second World Cup in Russia in 2018 before going down to Argentina on penalties in the 2022 showpiece, with Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick not enough as Kolo Muani missed a one-on-one with Emi Martinez to win it in the dying stages.

France World Cup 2026 Squad

Didier Deschamps is one of the most successful managers in modern international football and has been in charge of the national side since 2012, guiding the team to 2018 World Cup glory and the final four years later.

This will be Deschamps' final World Cup and he's once again blessed with incredible depth across all positions.

“We lifted the trophy in 2018 and reached the final in 2022, so our supporters are naturally expecting to see France [still in the running] by mid-July," Deschamps said before the tournament
"We're one of the 10 or 12 nations that can realistically set their sights on becoming world champions. But do you know how many there will be at the end? Just one! That means at least 11 disappointed nations.”

France World Cup 2026 Predicted Starting XI

It says something about France's ridiculous attacking options that the likes of Rayan Cherki, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola are all likely to be substitutes, along with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Kylian Mbappe is captain and will be the focal point in attack, supported by Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele. N'Golo Kante holds down the fort in midfield alongside Aurélien Tchouaméni, with William Saliba leading the defence.

France Starting XI

France World Cup: Key Players

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is the player France will rely on most at the 2026 World Cup. The captain has already established himself as one of the greatest performers in World Cup history, winning the tournament in 2018, finishing runner-up in 2022 and claiming the Golden Boot with eight goals in Qatar, including a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. Across just two World Cups, Mbappe has scored 12 goals in 14 matches, putting him among the highest scorers in tournament history before his 28th birthday. Blessed with explosive pace, elite finishing, intelligent movement and the ability to create chances for teammates, he is a constant threat both in transition and against deep defensive blocks.

Mbappe also enters the tournament as France's captain and one of the world's most decorated attackers, having won multiple domestic titles and individual awards while starring for both club and country. With 56 goals in 97 international appearances and the ability to decide matches on his own, he is the focal point of Deschamps' side and the biggest reason France are among the favourites to lift the trophy.

Ousmane Dembele

Dembele arrives at the 2026 World Cup as one of France's most dangerous attacking weapons. The winger enjoyed a sensational 2025-26 season with Paris Saint-Germain, playing a central role in the club's domestic and European success, one year after securing the Ballon d'Or for the world's best player. Renowned for his electrifying pace, elite dribbling and ability to beat defenders on either side thanks to his two-footedness, Dembele is capable of creating chances and scoring goals from almost any attacking position.

After years of battling injuries, he has developed into a more complete and consistent player, combining creativity with a far greater goal threat. His experience includes appearances at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups, giving him valuable tournament pedigree alongside captain Mbappe. With 58 caps and seven international goals, Dembele's influence extends beyond statistics, as his ability to stretch defences and create space for teammates makes France's attack significantly more dangerous whenever he is on the pitch. As opponents focus on stopping Mbappé, Dembele's capacity to decide matches on his own could prove crucial to France's hopes of winning a third World Cup title.

William Saliba

Saliba has developed into one of the world's premier centre-backs and is a vital player for France's 2026 World Cup ambitions. The Arsenal defender has become a mainstay for both club and country, helping establish one of Europe's strongest defences while earning more than 30 international caps since his debut in 2022. Standing 193cm tall, Saliba combines exceptional athleticism, recovery pace and physical strength with remarkable composure in possession, allowing France to build attacks confidently from the back. He was part of France's squad that reached the 2022 World Cup final and has since matured into a leader within a new generation of French defenders.

Widely regarded as one of the best defenders in world football, Saliba's ability to shut down elite forwards in one-on-one situations, dominate aerially and remain calm under pressure makes him the cornerstone of Deschamps' backline. With France boasting world-class attacking talent led by Mbappe, Saliba's presence provides the defensive stability required to challenge for a third World Cup title.

France World Cup Schedule - Group Stage

With the expanded 48-nation format effectively killing the traditional 'Group of Death', this is probably the toughest you can get.

France open against Africa Cup of Nations finalists Senegal and finish with a strong Norway side led by Erling Haaland. Iraq, led by Australian manager Graham Arnold, are expected to be the whipping boys, but can be very tough to break down defensively.

If France and Spain top their respective groups, they would be on a collision course for the semi-finals.

France World Cup: Best Bets

Going for some value here. As mentioned at the top of the preview, France have history of starting tournaments slowly and it was Senegal who stunned them in 2002.

While the expanded format means they almost certainly won't crash out of the group, it's possible that France could finish in third behind Senegal and Norway.

Senegal are world class and beat England last year before making the Africa Cup of Nations final, where they really should have been crowned champions. Norway meanwhile boast several world class players, led by Erling Haaland.

At $8.00, France effectively finishing third in Group I is worth a small stake - especially after a recent 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in a warm-up match, which showcased their vulnerabilities.

To Reach The Semi-Finals: $2.70 with NextBet

Even if France do finish third in their group, I would still back them to make the semi-finals. If they top the group, then Les Bleus should have a relatively smooth passage to the final four, while a second or third-place finish could see them face the likes of Brazil, England, Argentina or Portgual on the other side of the draw.

World Cup Golden Boot Winner: Kylian Mbappe @ $7.00 with Picklebet

While there's plenty of goalscoring options in this French side, Mbappe remains the go-to man up front.

He took home the Golden Boot in 2022 with eight goals and scored 25 goals in just 31 games for Real Madrid in La Liga this past season, along with finding the net 15 times in 11 appearances in the Champions League.
