The 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America promises even more surprise performances as the field expands to 48 teams. This article highlights four dark horse sides—Japan, Ecuador, Colombia, and Turkiye—that could exceed expectations and provide strong value in the betting markets. With solid recent form, depth, and favorable group draws, each team has the potential to make a deep run. The key recommendation: consider backing these outsiders as possible quarter-finalists or further, with Japan particularly noted for their balance and squad depth.

World Cup 2026 Dark Horses

Every World Cup produces a surprise package and we've come up with four value bets to back during the 2026 tournament in North America.

While the spotlight naturally falls on heavyweights such as Spain, France, Brazil, England and Argentina, history shows that a well-organised and talented outsider can make a deep run into the tournament and deliver enormous value in the outright betting market. Think Croatia in 1998 and 2018. Turkiye and South Korea in 2002. Morocco in 2022.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup expanding to 48 teams and featuring more knockout matches than ever before, the opportunity for a dark horse nation to progress deep has never been greater. We have made our serious World Cup outright winner predictions, but keep reading for our best dark horses that could exceed expectations and emerge as the tournament's biggest surprise packets.

Japan 🇯🇵

Japan shapes as one of the most dangerous dark horses at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and I genuinely wouldn't be shocked if they advanced into the quarter-finals and beyond. The Blue Samurai have firmly established themselves as Asia's premier football nation and possess the technical quality, tactical discipline and squad depth to trouble any opponent. I feel like the 'traditional' footballing nations always underestimate and discredit Japan, but that just means we get great value and they've proven time and time again they are capable of mixing it with the big boys.

Recent World Cup history provides plenty of encouragement. Japan defeated both Germany and Spain during their impressive 2022 campaign before going down on penalties to Croatia in the R16. Since then, they have continued to strengthen under manager Hajime Moriyasu, producing a series of standout performances against elite opposition, including defeating England and Brazil over the last year and reinforcing their reputation as one of the most organised teams in international football. All up, Japan are on a six-game winning streak coming into the tournament, conceding only one goal.

Drawn alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia and Sweden, Japan have a great opportunity to challenge for top spot in Group F. Winning the group could prove crucial, potentially delivering a more favourable knockout path and enhancing their chances of reaching the latter stages of the competition.

One player I'm a massive fan of is Daichi Kamada. The Crystal Palace midfielder combines technical excellence with creativity, composure and intelligence in possession. Kamada played a key role under Oliver Glasner at Eintracht Frankfurt, helping the club capture the UEFA Europa League before later reuniting with the Austrian coach in the Premier League. Kamada is coming off more European success with Palace lifting the Conference League trophy at season's end and could further enhance his reputation as a world class creative midfielder here.

Japan Starting XI

The entire Japanese squad is class - if they want, they could easily pick a starting team from the top leagues in Europe. Liverpool defensive midfielder Wataro Endo is a rock, while Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda just won the Eredivisie Golden Boot, scoring 25 goals in 31 appearances.

I jumped on Japan with a small stake at $101 outright last year and they've since come into $51-61 with most top Australian bookmakers. That's still solid value and I'm also loving the $5.00 on offer for a quarter-final run.

Ecuador 🇪🇨

With heat and humidity potentially playing a factor across North America, I want to be on some South American outsiders - and Ecuador tops the list.

Finishing second behind Argentina in qualifying, Ecuador are one of the best defensive teams in world football coming into this World Cup. Indeed, they haven't conceded more than one goal in a single game over the last two years and leaked just five overall in 16 qualifying games.

Unsurprisingly, La Tri's boast some big names in defence, with the most notable being Willian Pacho (PSG) and Piero Hincapie (Arsenal), who recently squared off in the UEFA Champions League final. Chelsea defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo provides a further shield, while veteran Enner Valencia is the main man up front, scoring six goals in qualifying.

With such an emphasis on defence, I've also backed goalkeeper Hernan Galindez at $101 for the Golden Glove, which could come into play if Ecuador go relatively deep, keep clean sheets and Galindez has some penalty shootout heroics in the knockout stage.

Ecuador Unbeaten

Overall, Ecuador are unbeaten in their last 19 games coming into this tournament, which includes a victory over reigning World Cup winners Argentina.

I give Sebastián Beccacece's side a decent chance of topping Group E, with Germany far below their best and Ivory Coast and Curacao very beatable. My only concern is a lack of goals up front (just 14 in 18 qualifying games, target the Under 2.5 goals market in H2H fixtures) and an over-reliance on 36-year-old Valencia.

Colombia 🇨🇴

There’s A LOT of potential in this Colombian outfit, especially in attack.

First of all, they have landed in a very manageable group. Portugal are the top seeded nation, but they are often unreliable early on at major tournaments and there’s always the controversy of Cristiano Ronaldo and how to best utilise the aging legend. With Uzbekistan and DR Congo the other two nations in Group K, there’s no reason why Colombia can’t top it and give themselves the best possible opportunity to make an impact in the knockout phase.

And in Luis Diaz, Los Cafeterias are equipped with one of the standout players in world football. The Bayern Munich winger has earned 70+ caps for his country and Diaz has no doubt been one of the most electrifying players in Europe this season. We also can’t forget about a resurgent James Rodriguez, who shot to superstardom on the back of his performances for Colombia when they made the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil. Rodriguez won the Golden Boot that tournament and the 34-year-old is enjoying an unexpected purple patch of form, also taking out the Golden Ball when Colombia finished runner-up to Argentina at Copa America 2024 - a tournament they entered on a 28-game unbeaten streak, which was also played across North America.

Néstor Lorenzo has put together a team built for tournament football - they scored the most goals at that Copa America tournament and were second only behind Argentina in South American qualifying with 28. Diaz scored seven and Benfica standout Luis Suarez netted four. Rodriguez scored three, while Jhon Duran, Juan Fernando Quintero and Rafael Santos Borre all found the back of the net twice, showcasing their incredible depth in the final third.

Defence may be a concern - Colombia leaked 18 goals in qualifying, but in David Ospina, Davinson Sánchez and Jefferson Lerma, they have immense experience and are capable of locking in on the big stage.

Turkiye 🇹🇷

Turkiye have landed in one of the most intriguing groups this World Cup - it's arguably the most competitive, but there's also a lack of traditional footballing powerhouse, meaning there's a great opportunity for one to step up, top the group and potentially receive a kinder path in the knockout phase - and I believe Vincenzo Montella's side can edge out USA, the Socceroos and Paraguay.

Third-place finishers at the 2002 World Cup, Turkiye are back as genuine dark horses in 2026, arriving with an exciting squad of emerging youngsters - including Arda Guler, the Real Madrid attacker who just won the UEFA Champions League Young Player of the Season award. Juventus' 21-year-old winger Kenan Yildiz is also rising swiftly and will be looking to take his career to the next level on the world's biggest stage.

Hakan Calhanoglu of Inter is the maestro in midfield, running the show and allowing the likes of Guler and Yildez to work their individual magic.

Turkiye are coming off a nice run to the quarter-finals at Euro 2024 and have only suffered one defeat against World Cup favourites Spain over the last 12 months. With seven wins from their last eight games, Turkiye are in form and their youngsters won't be overawed under the bright lights - the nation have history of deep World Cup runs and topping Group D could provide the perfect springboard for another.
