Spain World Cup 2026 Preview & Predictions

Equipped with an incredibly balanced squad and confident following Euro 2024 glory, Spain arrive in North America hopeful of landing a second World Cup trophy.

It's fair to say La Roja have drastically underachieved since securing their first World Cup in 2010, but with Lamine Yamal set for a massive tournament and a world class midfield, it's easy to see why they're favourites to return to the champions corner in 2026.

Spain World Cup History

Spain truly emerged as a footballing powerhouse in the mid 2000s, with their golden generation breaking through to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Andrés Iniesta scored an extra-time winner over the Netherlands in the final.

However, La Roja have struggled to back up that success on the biggest stage in recent World Cups, failing to make it past the R16 in the last three competitions.

After losing to Japan in the group stage in 2022, Spain crashed out 3-0 to Morocco in the R16.

Spain World Cup 2026 Squad

Manager Luis de la Fuente made the controversial and historic decision in selecting zero Real Madrid players - the first time the club won't be represented for Spain at a World Cup.

Defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal are the big names to miss out, but de la Fuente stands by his selections.

"For me, it's perfect," De la Fuente said. "It's the 26 we wanted.
"The best players aren't just at Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atlético. There are very good players at other clubs. As we have a deep understanding of Spanish football, we pick the ones we believe best fit our system."

Spain World Cup Predicted Starting XI

De la Fuente is expected to line up his starting side in a 4-3-3 formation. Fabian Ruiz, Rodri and Pedri headline a world class midfield, while Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams provide pace and flair out wide, with Mikel Oyarzabal reaping the rewards at striker.

Unai Simon is expected to keep his starting spot in between the sticks despite pressure from David Raya, who has an excellent season with Arsenal.

Spain World Cup: Key Players

Rodri

Rodri is arguably Spain's most influential player heading into the 2026 World Cup. The holding midfielder was named UEFA Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament after orchestrating Spain's triumphant campaign, dictating the tempo with his exceptional passing, positioning and composure under pressure. Rodri's ability to control possession, break up opposition attacks and launch Spain's transitions makes him the heartbeat of Luis de la Fuente's side.

A Ballon d'Or winner and serial trophy winner with both club and country, he brings leadership, experience and tactical intelligence to a squad packed with young stars. While players such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams provide the flair, Rodri is the player who gives Spain balance and structure, making him the key figure in their bid to win a second World Cup.

Pedri

Pedri is one of Spain's most important creative forces heading into the 2026 World Cup. The Barcelona midfielder played a pivotal role in Spain's UEFA Euro 2024 triumph, combining exceptional vision, close control and intelligence between the lines to unlock opposition defences. Unlike traditional playmakers, Pedri influences games through constant movement, quick passing combinations and an ability to progress the ball through crowded midfield areas.

Still only in his early twenties, he already has extensive international experience and has been a key figure in Spain's resurgence over the past five years. With Rodri providing the platform behind him, Pedri is the player most capable of controlling matches in the final third, creating chances and dictating the rhythm of Spain's attack. If Spain are to challenge for a second World Cup title, Pedri's creativity and composure will be central to their success.

Lamine Yamal

Yamal enters the 2026 World Cup as one of the most electrifying players in world football and a genuine superstar for Spain. He could easily reach Ronaldo & Messi status if he continues on this trajectory. The teenage winger was instrumental in Spain's UEFA Euro 2024 triumph, becoming the youngest player ever to score at a European Championship and finishing the tournament with four assists.

Blessed with exceptional dribbling ability, creativity and composure beyond his years, Yamal is capable of changing games with a single moment of brilliance. Operating from the right flank, he combines flair with end product, regularly creating chances and scoring important goals for both club and country. If Spain are to make another deep World Cup run in 2026, Yamal's ability to unlock defences and produce decisive moments on the biggest stage could prove the difference.

Spain World Cup Schedule - Group Stage

Spain have landed in a relatively comfortable Group H. Uruguay are out of form, Saudi Arabia are unlikely to repeat their shock group heroics from 2022 when they stunned Argentina and Cape Verde are making their World Cup debut.

Topping their group would see Spain face the runners-up in Group J - likely Austria or Algeria. Colombia or Croatia would be the most likely R16 opponents. The big game is potentially France in the semis if both sides top their respective groups and land on the same half of the knockout draw.

Spain World Cup: Best Bets

To Reach the Semi-Finals - $2.50 with Dabble
Outright Winner - $5.50 with Picklebet

If we're being real, only four or five nations really have a genuine shot at lifting the 2026 World Cup trophy - and I think Spain are the most complete side of the leading contenders.

La Roja were brilliant at Euro 2024, conquering the likes of Italy, Germany, France and England on their way to glory. They continued their spectacular form by dominating their qualifying group for the World Cup, picking up 16 of a possible 18 points and scoring 21 goals in the process. Spain conceded just twice and that was in a 2-2 draw against Turkey on the final matchday when qualification was already ensured.

Blessed with a rock solid defence, arguably the world's best midfield, blistering pace out wide and a proven finisher up front, Spain are absolutely deserved favourites to go all the way.

Total Group Points: 9 - $2.00 with Ladbrokes

As mentioned, Spain find themselves in a pretty favourable group. Six points are virtually guaranteed against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.

Uruguay can be dangerous and have proven World Cup pedigree, but the South American nation arrive at this tournament in underwhelming form, winning just five of their last 19 matches in all competitions - including a recent 5-1 loss to USA and 0-0 stalemate with Algeria.

Give me La Roja at even money to take maximum points.

Top Team Goalscorer: Mikel Oyarzabal - $2.75 with NextBet

I've backed Oyarzabal as a sneaky outside chance to pick up the Golden Boot at this World Cup and once again, he's primed to reap the rewards of those around him.

De la Fuente should keep faith with starting Oyarzabal at No. 9 after the Real Sociedad striker averaged a goal every 74 minutes during World Cup qualifying.

The 29-year-old scored the winner in the Euro 2024 final and has proven himself on the big stage. Oyarzabal should also take penalties. With Yamal and Nico playing provider on the flanks, Oyarzabal is primed for a big tournament.
