England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, arrive at the 2026 World Cup with high expectations but a history of heartbreak. Boasting star power in Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, the squad has notable exclusions such as Phil Foden and Harry Maguire. England should comfortably advance from a favorable group but face a likely quarter-final exit, potentially against Brazil. Kane is tipped to be a Golden Boot contender. While the Three Lions possess quality, defensive worries and tournament pressure may see their quest fall short once more.

England World Cup 2026 Preview & Predictions

Is more heartbreak on the horizon for England as the Three Lions - led by German manager Thomas Tuchel - embark on their pursuit of a first World Cup trophy since 1966?

Most likely. Let's face it, England are overrated every year by their ridiculous media, who then proceed to ruthlessly tear them down because they don't live up to the unrealistic expectations they themselves  have placed upon them.

Let's be fair - England are absolutely a class side and are equipped with one of the most prolific strikers in world football in Harry Kane. They made the final of Euro 2024 (although most of their performances were unconvincing and led to Gareth Southgate resigning). However, their defence is highly questionable, as is their ability to handle the seismic pressure they're under, especially when they start to enter the business end of the knockout phase.

With that in mind, read on below for our preview for England's upcoming World Cup campaign.

England World Cup History

It's been well-documented heartbreak for England every four years since their one and only World Cup triumph on home soil back in 1966.

The Three Lions have been fairly consistent, but they failed to build on a fourth place finish at Russia 2018, going out to France 2-1 in the quarter-finals of Qatar 2022.

England also suffered an embarrassing group stage exit - their first since 1958 - at Brazil 2014.

England World Cup 2026 Squad

Unsurprisingly, lots of controversy surrounding Thomas Tuchel's final 26-man squad, with the German manager deciding to leave the likes of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire at home.

“I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26 one-hundred per cent committed players in camp with us who know their roles, who are ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch and are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish," Tuchel said in his press conference.
“We have a huge chunk of youthfulness in the squad, with six players who have won titles at U21 level and Kobbie [Mainoo] who has already won titles and Nico O’Reilly who is very young and won his medals.
“We have specialists for all different kinds of scenarios, whether we are leading or chasing a result. We always want to be a strong set-piece team so we have specialists for that, and we want to be a strong penalty team so we have specialists for that.”

England World Cup 2026 Predicted Starting XI

Tuchel is tipped to line up his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with star striker and captain Harry Kane leading the line, with Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford utilising their pace down the flanks.

Jude Bellingham will have full creative control in attacking midfield with the likes of Palmer and Foden absent, while Declan Rice holds down the fort centrally.

There's a distinct Man City flavour defensively, including the departing John Stones, Marc Guehi and rising fullback Nico O'Reilly.

England Starting XI

England World Cup: Key Players

Harry Kane

Kane remains England's most important player heading into the 2026 World Cup. The captain and all-time leading scorer has amassed 78 goals in 112 international appearances, while his eight World Cup goals include a Golden Boot-winning campaign in 2018 when he scored six times. Kane combines elite finishing with outstanding link-up play, regularly dropping deep to create opportunities for teammates before arriving in the box to finish chances himself.

His influence extends beyond goals, providing leadership, experience and composure in high-pressure moments for a side aiming to end its long wait for a second World Cup title. Fresh off another prolific season with Bayern Munich, where he scored more than 60 goals across all competitions, Kane enters the tournament in exceptional form. England's attack is packed with talent, but Kane remains the focal point and the player most capable of turning possession into goals, making him the key figure in Tuchel's quest for World Cup glory.

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham is the engine that drives England's midfield and one of the most complete players at the 2026 World Cup. Still only 22, he already has 46 international caps and six goals, while his performances for England at both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024 showcased his ability to influence the biggest matches. Bellingham combines technical quality with physicality, excelling as a box-to-box midfielder who can win possession, progress the ball, create chances and score crucial goals.

His overhead-kick equaliser against Slovakia at Euro 2024 and his consistent displays for Real Madrid have cemented his reputation as a big-game player. A Champions League and La Liga winner, Bellingham brings leadership, maturity and a relentless competitive edge beyond his years. With Kane leading the attack and Declan Rice anchoring midfield, Bellingham is the player capable of linking every phase of England's game, making him a central figure in this Three Lions setup.

Nico O'Reilly

O'Reilly could be England's breakout star at the 2026 World Cup. The 21-year-old enjoyed a stunning 2025-26 season with Manchester City, winning the Premier League Young Player of the Season award after establishing himself as a first-team regular and earning a place in this World Cup squad. Originally developed as a midfielder, O'Reilly's versatility allows him to play at left-back or in midfield, combining physicality, technical quality and a relentless work rate.

Standing out for his ball-carrying ability, attacking instincts and composure in possession, he has already delivered in big moments, including scoring twice in Manchester City's League Cup final victory and forcing his way into the England setup with three senior caps. While England's established stars will attract most of the attention, O'Reilly offers a unique blend of energy, versatility and fearlessness that could make him one of the tournament's surprise performers and a key weapon for Tuchel.

England World Cup Schedule - Group Stage

The Poms have landed in a very favourable group. Croatia are an aging side and a far cry from the team that stunned them at the 2018 World Cup, while Ghana are in absolutely woeful form, coming into this tournament on a six-game winless streak, losing five. Panama are set to be the whipping boys of Group L.

England also find themselves on the 'better' side of the draw - but that's only if the top nations all win their groups according to seeding, which would mean they would avoid France and Spain until the final.

The Three Lions are widely expected to at the very least make the quarter-finals - but that's when things could get dicey against record World Cup winners Brazil.

England World Cup: Best Bets

To Reach The Quarter-Finals - $1.80 with Dabble
Stage of Elimination: Quarter-Finals - $4.50 with Picklebet

England should absolutely advance to the quarter-finals. They will likely have no trouble topping their group and that would have them on course for a potential R16 showdown with either Mexico or Switzerland - both of whom they should be able to beat. The Three Lions edged out the Swiss at Euro 2024 on their way to the final, while Mexico aren't the side they once were - but they will have home advantage.

Nevertheless, this England side are backed to make the last eight, but that's where heavyweights Brazil could be waiting. Brazil have been below their best for a while now, but Carlo Ancelotti is a proven legendary manager who could very well inspire them back to their glory days at this tournament.

England have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage on a record seven occasions and that number could very well increase again here.

Group L Straight Forecast: England/Croatia @ $2.00 with Ladbrokes

Pretty simple this one and no need to overthink. England should stroll past Ghana and Panama, making it a straight shootout for top spot with Croatia, who should do the same.

As mentioned, Croatia aren't the side they once were and were eliminated in the group stage at Euro 2024 without winning a single game.

Croatia benefitted from a soft World Cup qualifying group and at the time of writing, were last seen losing comfortably to Belgium in a warm-up game. England are favourites and even with a draw, they could very well still top the group on goal difference.

World Cup Golden Boot Winner: Harry Kane @ $8.00 with Picklebet

Honestly, Kane could wrap up the Golden Boot in the group stage alone. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he bagged a couple of hat-tricks against Ghana and Panama and from there he would be tough to beat.

Kane won the Gplden Boot in 2018 with six goals and is coming off a career-best season at Bayern, where he scored 36 goals from just 31 appearances in the Bundesliga, along with 14 goals in 13 outings in the Champions League.

Only real danger here is Kylian Mbappe likely seeing more games if France go deeper into the tournament.
