Liverpool launch their Champions League campaign at Anfield against Atletico Madrid, where the Reds boast 17 wins in their last 18 home group matches. While Liverpool’s defence has vulnerabilities, they’re tipped for victory, with both teams expected to score. Cody Gakpo is one to watch, given his strong form. Atletico, under Diego Simeone, arrive following a confidence-shaking defeat and have never beaten a Premier League side in UCL group games. Both teams have fresh faces in their lineups, but Liverpool’s European pedigree at home gives them the edge.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid Champions League Tips & Prediction

Liverpool are a different beast on European nights at Anfield and are backed to open their Champions League campaign with a win, but Atletico can get on the scoresheet in defeat. Cody Gakpo is also backed to continue his red-hot start to the season and get amongst the goals.

While Liverpool are still way off where they'd like to be, the Reds are deserved favourites to take care of Atletico Madrid at home, with manager Andoni Iraola getting his first taste of Champions League action.

Equipped with a dominant 17 wins from their last 18 European league/group phase outings at Anfield, Liverpool will be confident of securing all three points as they look to get their UCL campaign off to a winning start after finishing in the top three in the league phase across the last two seasons.

Atletico meanwhile come into this clash down on confidence following last weekend's shock 3-0 defeat to Bilbao.

Diego Simeone's side also typically struggle against English teams - indeed, they've never beaten a Premier League club in 10 previous league/group phase games in this competition.

So Liverpool should come out on top at home, but a defence featuring Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Sergio Van Dijk and Milos Kerkez hasn't been convincing, so Atleti can find the back of the net.

Cody Gakpo has been heavily involved in the goals to start the season and the Dutch winger can have more impact in this one.
  • Liverpool have won 17 of their last 18 European group/league games at Anfield
  • Liverpool have won their last three meetings vs Atletico
  • Liverpool have won 10 of their last 12 UCL openers at Anfield
  • Atletico are coming off a 3-0 loss to Bilbao in La Liga
  • Atletico have scored in 22 of their last 24 league/group phase games
  • Atletico have failed to keep a clean sheet in 15 of their last 16 UCL matches
  • Cody Gakpo has registered a goal or assist in all three EPL games this season

Liverpool Form Analysis

It's not been a great start to the season from Liverpool, but they do bring winning momentum into this clash.

Andoni Iraola's side were never in front in a pair of 2-2 draws away to Newcastle and at home to Nottingham Forest across their opening two Premier League games.

However, the Reds enjoyed a strong start in their recent trip to Portman Road to face newly-promoted Ipswich, with Alexander Isak scoring a brace inside 10 minutes, with Gakpo playing provider for both goals.

Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals last season by eventual winners PSG.

Liverpool Team News

Bradley Barcola has won two Champions League trophies with PSG and could be in line for a first start at Anfield, meaning Victor Munoz would likely make way.

Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo could be maintained at right back as Liverpool kept their first clean sheet of the season at Ipswich.

Liverpool Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez; Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister; Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola; Alexander Isak

Atletico Madrid Form Analysis

It's been an up-and-down start to the La Liga season for Atletico, who have won twice, drawn once and lost once across their opening four games

Atletico took seven points from their first three games, beating Malaga and Sevilla either side of a 2-2 draw with Villarreal.

However, Los Rojiblancos were poor in their most-recent outing, going down 3-0 away to Bilbao last weekend.

Atletico will lean on the experience of manager Diego Simeone, who is the longest-serving coach in this season's Champions League, having took charge all the way back in 2011.

Atletico Madrid Team News

All eyes will be on Julian Alvaraz, who came off the bench against Bilbao after trying to force a move away from Atletico all summer.

Alexander Sorloth is out with a thigh injury, while Arnau Ortiz is suspended.

New signings Jonathan David and Cristian Romero are also pushing for starts.

Atletico Madrid Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, Cristian Romero, David Hancko; Giuliano Simeone, Pablo Barrios, Morten Hjulmand, Ademola Lookman; Julian Alvarez, Alex Baena

Verdict

Liverpool are tipped for a win at Anfield, with both teams finding the back of the net.
