Doomben stages a ten-race card on Melbourne Cup Day, with the track rated a Soft 5 and potential for further rain. The standout tip is He's Tru Blue in Race 10, who has shown consistent form this preparation and benefits from a drop in grade, despite a wide draw. Pinot Pirate (Race 8) is considered a strong chance to remain unbeaten after a dominant debut, while Star Rouge (Race 4) appeals on the back of promising trials on heavy ground. Alto Luna (Race 1) is noted as a roughie with proven ability on testing surfaces.

Doomben hosts a ten-race program on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, November 3, with several promising three-year-olds and progressive gallopers among the leading contenders.

The track is currently rated a Soft 5, with the rail out 7m for the entire circuit, while the possibility of further rain could make underfoot conditions an important consideration throughout the afternoon.

Our selections and form analysis cover four races on Tuesday's program, while our Bookmaker Reviews provide comparisons, ratings and detailed information on Australia's leading betting operators.

Doomben Tips November 3

Sky Racing Three-Year-Old QTIS Maiden Plate Tips (Race 1)

Doomben Roughie - Race 1 No. 1 Alto Luna

A rise in distance and the possibility of more rain could bring about an improved performance from Alto Luna, who has previously shown he can be competitive on testing ground.

The son of Puissance De Lune produced one of his better efforts when runner-up over 1350m at Ipswich in May, finishing just over a length from the winner after starting at $15 and securing an economical run from an inside draw.

Although unable to build on that performance in three subsequent appearances, there were excuses for two of those defeats, including a Listed assignment at the end of his previous campaign and a difficult wide barrier when resuming over 1200m at Eagle Farm in September.

His latest sixth over 1350m at Ipswich was more encouraging than the finishing position suggests, with the gelding appearing ready for the additional distance he encounters on Tuesday.

Ashley Butler knows the three-year-old well and reunites with him from barrier six, and while improvement is required to break through against this opposition, his previous efforts suggest he is capable of producing a competitive performance at generous odds.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 4 No. 9 Star Rouge

Encouraging trial performances on Heavy ground make Star Rouge an interesting prospect for Tuesday's three-year-old maiden, particularly if conditions deteriorate from the current Soft 5 rating.

The Grant Allard-trained gelding recorded a win and a runner-up finish in two Deagon trials on Heavy going during his initial preparation, before making his race-day debut over this course and distance at the end of September.

He finished fifth on that occasion but was beaten less than a length and a half after racing prominently from barrier nine, with the runner-up subsequently winning to provide some encouragement from the form.

Freshened since that debut, the son of Star Turn returned to the trials at Deagon on Friday and produced another solid runner-up finish, suggesting he has maintained his fitness and could be ready to improve with the benefit of race experience.

A kinder draw and the addition of a tongue tie for the first time are further positives, while Kyle Wilson-Taylor takes the ride, giving Star Rouge an appealing opportunity to break his maiden at the second attempt.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 10 Pinot Pirate

A dominant debut victory at Gatton last month marked Pinot Pirate as a promising prospect, and the lightly raced gelding looks capable of maintaining his unbeaten record when stepping into metropolitan company on Tuesday.

The Chris and Corey Munce-trained three-year-old had shown ability in his trials before making an immediate impression over 860m, pressing forward to contest the early lead before drawing away decisively in the straight.

His winning margin of more than four and a half lengths demonstrated the superiority he held over his six rivals, while the manner in which he accelerated clear suggested there could be plenty more improvement as he gains experience.

That debut success came on a Soft 5 surface, providing encouragement that he can handle the current conditions, while an inside barrier should help him secure a favourable position as he steps up to 1200m for the first time.

Connections elected to bypass a recent Ipswich engagement in favour of this assignment, and with the Munce stable enjoying success at Doomben, Pinot Pirate looks well placed to make the transition from country maiden company to a metropolitan Class 1.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 10 No. 2 He's Tru Blue

Two strong performances this preparation suggest He's Tru Blue is closing in on his first Australian victory, with the talented three-year-old finding a suitable opportunity in Tuesday's Benchmark 68.

The son of Blue Point was a winner in the United Kingdom before arriving in Australia, and his previous local campaign included an encouraging runner-up finish over 1300m at Eagle Farm in May, where he performed well on Heavy ground.

He resumed this preparation with a competitive effort over 1200m at Eagle Farm, finishing just over a length from the winner, before improving second-up when narrowly beaten over this course and distance on Good ground.

That latest performance was particularly encouraging, with the gelding missing victory by just half a length, and the slight drop in grade on Tuesday gives him another opportunity to capitalise on his consistent recent form.

Although the wide barrier presents a challenge, He's Tru Blue has demonstrated tactical versatility, including when ridden patiently at Eagle Farm in May, and with premiership leader Ben Thompson taking the ride, he looks capable of overcoming the draw and returning to winning form.
