The 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, a prestigious Group 1 handicap over 1400m at Caulfield, is set to return to its traditional September date after two years in November. The event is a renowned springboard for emerging stars, with recent winners including Callsign Mav (2022), Magic Time (2023) and Kimochi (2024). Key contenders this year are Angel Capital, who remains unbeaten first-up, Sepals, a strong four-year-old with fresh form, and Another Wil, who is proven at the track and distance. A Group 1 handicap over 1400m, the race has long been a stepping stone for progressive gallopers before they rise to weight-for-age company.

Angel Capital (barrier 13) has made a seamless transition to Chris Waller’s yard, kicking off with a strong first-up performance that kept his unbeaten fresh record intact.

The step to 1400m appears well timed, and with two wins from as many attempts over the Caulfield 1400m, he arrives with the right credentials to make an impact.

Sepals (barrier 16) is another promising four-year-old, who closed out his initial campaign with a brave fourth in the Australian Guineas.

Although that preparation stretched him by the end, he has returned this spring with renewed strength, highlighted by a decisive victory at Caulfield on August 30.

His upward trajectory suggests he can measure up again at Group 1 level.

Another Wil (barrier 7) wasn’t able to show his best when resuming in the Memsie Stakes, but the drop back into handicap conditions gives him a better platform.

Already proven against seasoned performers, he captured the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes over this same track and distance in February.

A runner-up in last year’s Rupert Clarke, and with an excellent record when second-up, he shapes as one of the more reliable contenders despite a testing weight.

Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Winners

After a short two-year period of being staged at the end of spring in mid-to-late November, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes returns to its traditional mid-September position on the calendar in 2025. First run in 1951 as the Invitation Stakes, the event has long been a key feature of the Caulfield spring program.

A Group 1 handicap over 1400m, the race has a reputation for showcasing progressive gallopers before they graduate to weight-for-age company. Recent winners include Callsign Mav (2022), Magic Time (2023) and Kimochi (2024), each of whom added their names to a storied honour roll.
