The Western Bulldogs and Collingwood have gone blow for blow across their recent meetings, with the past 5 clashes alternating winners. The Bulldogs took this year's Round 12 meeting by just four points, while the previous meeting was a six-point Collingwood win. This has become an extremely competitive matchup rather than one where either side has established clear control.
That pushes me towards Collingwood -1.5. The Magpies' attack has improved considerably across the back half of the season, averaging 97.0 points across their past five and passing 100 points four times across their final nine home-and-away games after doing so only once in their first 14. The 63-point loss to Brisbane was ugly, but Collingwood still scored 96 points and Jordan De Goey, Sam Swadling and their younger forwards all produced encouraging performances.
The Bulldogs enter with slightly better immediate form after beating Melbourne by 21 points, but there are questions over their tall structure. Aaron Naughton hurt his ankle against the Demons, Tim English is trying to return from a knee injury and Sam Darcy remains unavailable. That could become important when the contest tightens and the Dogs need reliable targets ahead of the ball.
The Under 169.5 also appeals. The Bulldogs have increasingly built their game around defence rather than trying to win shootouts, conceding 100+ only twice across a 15-game stretch from Round 9. Seven of their past nine matches have also finished below this line, while seven of the past nine meetings between these sides have gone under 169.5.
Tim Membrey is the preferred goalscorer angle. He has kicked multiple goals in three of his past five games and booted three against the Bulldogs earlier this season. In a final where experience should matter, Membrey 2+ goals looks the strongest forward prop.
There is also plenty to like about Jordan De Goey 25+ disposals. He produced 30 disposals against the Bulldogs in Round 12 and enters the finals in good touch after recording 32 disposals, six clearances and two goals against Brisbane. He has reached 25+ in eight of his past 14 games and should again spend significant time around the contest.
- The Bulldogs and Collingwood have alternated wins across their past four meetings.
- Collingwood are averaging 97.0 points across their past five games.
- Both teams have won only one of their past four matches.
- Tim Membrey kicked three goals against the Bulldogs earlier this season.
Head to Head
Western Bulldogs and Collingwood Magpies have produced a remarkably even recent rivalry.
The Bulldogs won 97-93 in Round 12 this season, Collingwood won by six points in 2025, the Dogs won by 18 in 2024 and Collingwood won by 12 in 2023. The margins tell the story: this matchup has rarely been one-sided.
The Bulldogs have won four of the past 10 meetings compared with six for Collingwood, while the Magpies hold the much stronger overall historical record.
Western Bulldogs Form Analysis
The Bulldogs finished the home-and-away season with a much-needed 108-87 victory over Melbourne, snapping a run of three matches without a win.
That performance was built around Ed Richards, Marcus Bontempelli and Matthew Kennedy, with the Dogs producing enough midfield drive to continually put Melbourne under pressure.
Their broader form remains mixed, however. Across their past five they have two wins, a draw and two losses, averaging 82.6 points while conceding 79.0.
Their defensive improvement does give them a chance to keep this close. The Dogs have become a far more disciplined defensive team across the second half of the year, which is another reason this looks more like a grinding final than a shootout.
Collingwood Magpies Form Analysis
Collingwood have also been inconsistent approaching September, winning only one of their past four matches.
However, there has been a significant improvement in their attacking output across the second half of the season. The Magpies have averaged 97.0 points across their past five and have found more avenues to goal than they possessed earlier in the campaign.
Their Round 24 loss to Brisbane was ugly defensively, conceding 159 points, but there were still positives with the ball. Collingwood kicked 96 points, while Jordan De Goey had 32 disposals and two goals and several younger players continued to contribute.
De Goey becomes particularly important in that scenario. Nick Daicos will attract enormous attention, leaving De Goey with opportunities to impact both around stoppage and forward of centre.
