Gosford Best Bet - Race 2 No. 9 Peyton

A well-bred colt by Zoustar out of Group 3 winner Mildred, Peyton showed enough in three starts during his first preparation to suggest he can make his mark this campaign.

He had excuses when supported on debut at Warwick Farm on March 11, racing wide without cover when fifth-of-eight, before finishing third on the Randwick Kensington circuit a fortnight later and having a slow recovery in a race that has since produced three subsequent winners.

The campaign ended with a close-up second behind St Gotthard, who subsequently headed north and won the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic before a spell, with that colt also prominent in early Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes futures markets.

Peyton has moved well without being knocked around in two winter trials ahead of Friday’s return, with talented young rider Zac Lloyd remaining aboard from those hit-outs.

Lloyd boasts a 20% strike-rate for the O’Shea and Charlton stable over the past 12 months, while the yard itself has struck at close to 28% at Gosford in that period, giving Peyton plenty in his favour first-up.

Gosford Value Bet - Race 7 No. 6 Regal Problem

A stable switch to Joe Pride could prove significant for Regal Problem, who was tested over middle-distance trips during her previous campaign.

The pick of those efforts came first-up in a Highway on January 27, when she finished third and arguably should have gone even closer, while her only genuine failure later in the preparation came when tested at Group 3 level.

Her earlier form suggests these shorter distances are more suitable, including a first-up win last spring before completing a double over seven furlongs, while she was also runner-up on debut behind a subsequent Group 2 winner.

Two August trials have been encouraging, placing in the first before being allowed to settle off the speed and cruise to the line under a hold in the latest.

Tyler Schiller takes the fresh ride and arrives in good form after a metropolitan double on August 12, another pair of winners last week and victory aboard the impressive St Johann at Newcastle on Tuesday.

Gosford Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 7 Tannin

An odds-on quote was justified when Tannin won over this track-and-trip via his June 11 debut, earning himself a trip north for the Listed Tattersall’s Stakes at Eagle Farm on Tatts Tiara Day.

The Godolphin colt was heavily backed in Brisbane but disappointed with genuine excuses, having shown signs of thumps and a slow recovery post-race, while it was also his first time travelling during that initial preparation.

A half-brother to Group 2 winner Cinsault, Tannin was scratched from a handy midweek race against his own age at Canterbury on Wednesday and instead returns here against older opposition.

Taking on seasoned rivals is never straightforward for an early-season three-year-old, but this looks a race there for the taking, particularly with several of the main threats arriving off heavy defeats.

Tommy Berry rode him throughout his first preparation and the classy hoop has an excellent recent record at Gosford, with 11 winners at the circuit over the past 12 months at a strike-rate of almost 38% and an ROI above 30%.
