Geelong Tips August 28

Ladbrokes Switch Maiden Plate Tips (Race 1)

Geelong Best Bet - Race 1 No. 4 Hemi Two Barrell

A strong staying performance last week gives Hemi Two Barrell plenty of appeal in the opener, despite the four-year-old tackling 2470m at just his third career start.

The Shane Jackson-trained galloper raced keenly over 2000m but was still able to lead at a fast tempo and stick on well for second behind Mission Taichi.

He finished almost three lengths clear of the remainder, suggesting there was plenty of merit in the run given how much work he did through the early and middle stages.

The son of Heroic Valour should have further improvement to come from a fitness perspective and gives every indication that the additional distance will suit.

If he can settle more kindly this time around, Hemi Two Barrell looks capable of taking another significant step forward and should be in this for a long way.

Geelong Roughie - Race 2 No. 8 Arashi Flash

Arashi Flash produced a much-improved effort when third at Bairnsdale last start and looks capable of building on that performance at a bigger price.

The Busuttin and Young-trained galloper had excuses on debut at Sale when hampered and caught wide throughout, before settling midfield last time and sticking on strongly to finish just a length from the winner.

He recorded a figure three lengths slower than standard benchmark at Bairnsdale, which is the best last-start rating produced by any runner in this field.

The son of Tagaloa maps to settle just behind the speed in a race lacking obvious pressure and should get every opportunity to peel into clear running around the home turn.

The step up in distance also looks suitable and, with further improvement likely at start three, Arashi Flash can give this a genuine shake.

Prestige Jayco Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Geelong Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 15 Captain Redbeard

There was plenty to like about Captain Redbeard's first-up third on Soft ground over 1200m at Seymour on August 7.

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper drew awkwardly and settled worse than midfield off a slow tempo before working into the race with the fastest 400m-to-200m split and peaking late behind Misty Whisper.

That performance returned a figure three lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is superior to anything the raced runners in this field have produced.

The son of Per Incanto should strip fitter for the run and appears to have returned in good order after showing enough ability during his first preparation.

Barrier placement presents the main query, but with even luck from the wide draw, Captain Redbeard looks well placed to finish in the thick of the action.

TMC Industries BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Geelong Value Bet - Race 6 No. 1 Ravenclaw

Ravenclaw is worth consideration despite finishing outside the placings in two starts since leaving the Chris Waller stable, with both appearances coming in much stronger company and neither race unfolding in his favour.

He was asked to work early when leading at a strong tempo first-up over 1000m in a Benchmark 70 at Sandown, before drawing wide and settling well back in a Saturday BM74 over 1100m at Caulfield a couple of weeks later.

That Caulfield contest was run at a very slow tempo, leaving Ravenclaw around six lengths off the leaders and with too much ground to make up in the straight.

This is a considerable drop in grade and barrier two should allow him to settle much closer to the speed without having to spend unnecessary energy early.

Now third-up and likely ready to peak, the former city galloper looks capable of producing a much-improved performance in this easier assignment.
