Northam Tips August 27

Northam Best Bet - Race 1 No. 6 Official Business

Without setting the world on fire, Official Business was still competitive in both starts as a two-year-old last season, with each appearance coming in Saturday company at Ascot.

The first was a fourth-of-11 finish in a juvenile event dominated by Striking Alibi, while his opening campaign concluded with a 1.5-length defeat when stepping to 1100m.

Winter trial work has been encouraging, with the gelding comfortably winning a 400m Belmont heat on August 3 before narrowly defeating Gaintree over 1000m on August 17 in the fastest trial of that set.

That pair opened up a sizeable gap on the remainder and the form has already been franked, with Gaintree subsequently leading throughout to win an early-season three-year-old event at Belmont last Saturday.

Official Business looks well placed kicking off at provincial level and gets Chris Parnham aboard, with the rider striking at better than 16% when combining with his father Neville over the past 12 months.

Northam Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 History Supreme

Backing up from last Thursday's Pinjarra meeting, History Supreme now steps to a staying trip after remaining at the mile for start two on August 20.

Very little went right for the son of Astern in that latest appearance, where he was allowed to find his feet off the speed in a race that never changed complexion, with the first two in running filling the first two placings.

Despite being unsuited by the race shape, the gelding still worked home fairly under the circumstances and recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the race.

There were also excuses on debut at Northam earlier in the month, when he hit a flat spot and was forced back towards the inferior inside going before producing the fastest final 600m of the August 6 contest.

History Supreme gives the impression he is looking for this longer journey and, in an average affair, he's one of the few in this field with upside.

Northam Value Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Ocean Goddess

Lightly raced for a six-year-old, Ocean Goddess has completed just 10 starts across two preparations and has generally been thereabouts throughout her career.

Her record includes a debut victory at a big price, while her second success came third-up over a mile at Belmont in a Class 3 on February 18.

Although she is likely to appreciate further as the preparation progresses, 1300m looks a suitable starting point and she has shown previously that she can sprint well over shorter trips, including when fourth-of-nine over 1200m at Ascot early this year after attracting late support.

Fresh on potentially rain-affected ground is not ideal, but both runs on Soft tracks during her first preparation were encouraging, including a fourth-of-12 over seven furlongs at Northam last winter.

Ocean Goddess will need some luck given her racing pattern, but she possesses a strong finish and, with as much ability as any of her rivals, the each-way quote appeals in the finale.
