Seymour Value Bet - Race 4 No. 9 Jonquil
There was enough merit in Jonquil's June 25 resumption over 1400m at Bendigo, where she never threatened as a drifting outsider but found the distance on the sharp side.
Genuine excuses followed when stepping to a mile second-up at Bairnsdale, with the Brett Scott-trained five-year-old tightened for room and continually forced back before recording the second-fastest final 200m in a race that has since produced five subsequent winners.
A month between runs preceded her latest appearance over 2050m on a Heavy 10 at Moe on August 13, where a kinder draw may have seen her go close to winning after she was forced back and conceded too much ground behind an all-the-way winner.
The daughter of Highland Reel was easily the pick of the chasers in finishing runner-up and should strip fitter again with that staying run under her belt, while barrier four gives her the opportunity to settle closer this time.
Jonquil can give this a genuine shake at an each-way price, although respect is afforded to favourite Rock Catcher, who arrives off a promising debut and may possess the most upside in a race lacking depth.

Seymour Best Bet - Race 6 No. 11 Misty Whisper
Misty Whisper was terrific when resuming over this track and trip on August 7, overcoming a wide draw and a seemingly hopeless position entering the straight to rattle home from the rear and score as favourite.
That form has already been franked, with runner-up Whimsy Smile subsequently bolting in by four lengths at Murtoa last Friday.
This is a tougher assignment stepping out of maiden company against more seasoned opposition, but the locally trained gelding has as much upside as anything in the field after showing plenty of raw ability during his short autumn preparation.
He recorded the fastest final 200m of both starts during that first campaign, including when runner-up at Geelong on May 22 in a maiden that contained some depth, and handled a Soft 7 without issue when winning first-up this time around.
Linc Sullivan's lightly raced grey looks capable of progressing quickly through the lower grades, while a better draw gives Will Gordon more options as Misty Whisper attempts to remain unbeaten this preparation.

Seymour Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Hotei Senshi
Connections elected to scratch Hotei Senshi from a BM62 at Geelong on August 14 after drawing very wide, and although he again lands out on the track here, that may not prove a major disadvantage late in the program on a testing surface.
The lightly raced son of Maurice now gets to a mile, with his only previous attempt beyond 1400m coming in a Heavy 10 defeat when runner-up during his first preparation, while the winner Blistering went on to score at metropolitan level at Sandown 10 days later.
His July 5 return produced another narrow second behind Magnetic Chess, who subsequently performed well in a metropolitan BM64 before finishing runner-up at Bendigo behind Electric Elvis.
There was also merit in Hotei Senshi's July 25 effort in an end-of-season three-year-old handicap at Caulfield, where he was one of few runners making meaningful ground along the inferior inside section of the track.
The rise in weight is significant, but so too is the drop back to a country BM62, and with Billy Egan returning to the saddle and proven Heavy-track form already on the board, Hotei Senshi looks well placed on Thursday.
