Lyon vs Fenerbahce promises another closely contested Champions League qualifier, with both teams sharing the spoils in recent encounters. Lyon’s home advantage and Fenerbahce’s attacking strength, featuring stars like Mason Greenwood, suggest a high-scoring match is likely. With Lyon’s defensive vulnerabilities on display recently and Fenerbahce’s strong attacking record, the key bet is for over 2.5 goals. Another draw is on the cards, making Fenerbahce attractive in the Double Chance market, while Greenwood is tipped to make a significant impact again.

Lyon vs Fenerbahce UEFA Champions League Tips & Prediction

The spoils were shared in the first leg in Istanbul and another tight encounter is tipped in France as Lyon host Fenerbahce for the right to advance into the Champions League proper. I'm backing Over 2.5 goals and Mason Greenwood to continue his red-hot form, while another draw at the end of 90 minutes offers value.

A cracking clash is in prospect here. Fenerbahce have assembled an electric squad as they attempt qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009, with the likes of Mason Greenwood, Marco Asensio, Romelu Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi all set to feature in the final third for the Turkish giants.

Lyon meanwhile have home ground advantage for this second leg and will be confident of advancing after crushing Sparta Prague on their own turf in the previous round of qualifying.

It's tough to pick a winner, with the last two meetings between these sides resulting in a draw. I think the value lies with Fenerbahce, so the Turkish side in the Double Chance market and another share of the spoils appeals.

But Over 2.5 goals is the main play. Lyon conceded an xG of 2.77 against Toulouse in their Ligue 1 opener last weekend, while as mentioned, this Fenerbache side have goals in them and fired in four in the Turkish Super Lig this past weekend.

English winger Greenwood has lots of experience facing French teams having played for Marseille last season and is tipped for more impact here.
  • Lyon have seen Over 2.5 goals in seven of their last nine competitive games
  • Fenerbahce have seen Over 2.5 goals in two of their last three competitive games
  • Fenerbahce have scored six goals in their last three games
  • Fenerbahce are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 competitive games
  • Lyon conceded an xG of 2.77 vs Toulouse last weekend
  • The last two meetings have resulted in a draw
  • Mason Greenwood has four goal involvements in his last three games & scored vs Lyon in the first leg

Lyon vs Fenerbahce Head To Head

Lyon are unbeaten in all six previous meetings, with the last two ending in a draw - including last week's 1-1 result in Istanbul.

Lyon striker Loïs Openda opened the scoring before Greenworld curled in a sublime strike for the equaliser.

Lyon Form Analysis

Lyon are no strangers to the UEFA Champions League, having reached the group stage on 16 occasions. Their most recent appearance came in 2019, when they produced a memorable run to the semi-finals before eventually falling to eventual champions Bayern Munich.

The French club has endured a difficult period off the pitch in recent years, but signs of progress have emerged. Lyon reached the Europa League Round of 16 last season, where they were eliminated by Celta Vigo, while also securing a fourth-place finish in Ligue 1 to book another crack at Champions League qualification.

Paulo Fonseca's side began their qualifying campaign in the previous round and had to overcome an early setback after losing the first leg 2-1 away to Sparta Prague. Lyon responded emphatically at home, taking advantage of their opponents being reduced to 10 men to record a convincing 3-0 victory and advance to the play-off round.

After the 1-1 first leg draw with Fenerbahce, Lyon launched their new Ligue 1 season with a 2-0 win on the road over Toulouse, with Noah Nartey and Malick Fofana scoring second-half goals. However, it wasn't a convincing win from Lyon as they lost the shot count 17-11 and were under immense pressure throughout.

Lyon Team News

Tyler Morton and captain Corentin Tolisso should return for this clash after Fonseca rotated his squad at the weekend.

Moussa Niakhate could be in doubt with an ankle injury, while Pavel Sulc and Nicolas Tagliafico should be available for selection. Openda should again spearhead the attack.

Lyon Possible Starting XI: Dominik Greif, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Clinton Mata, Ruben Kluivert, Abner Vinícius, Tyler Morton, Corentin Tolisso, Tanner Tessmann, Ernest Nuamah, Loïs Openda, Malick Fofana

Fenerbahce Form Analysis

Fenerbahce have qualified for the UEFA Champions League proper on six occasions, but they have been absent from the competition since 2008 after suffering nine eliminations in qualifying over the past 18 years.

The Turkish giants narrowly missed out on the Süper Lig title to fierce rivals Galatasaray last season and will be eager to make an early statement in 2026/27.

However, their domestic campaign began in disappointing fashion with a shock 2-1 defeat to Genclerbirligi on the opening weekend before Fenerbahce bounced back with a strong 4-2 victory over Konyaspor. Greenwood produced another strong performance with a goal and assist, while Muriqi and Asensio also got on the scoresheet.

Ismail Kartal's side moved past Gornik Zabrze and Sturm Graz to reach the final qualifying round in the Champions League.

Fenerbahce Team News

Talisca has scored four of Fenerbahce's six goals in qualifying, but could operate as a false nine here, with Muriqi starting up front and Lukaku coming off the bench.

Possible Fenerbahce Starting XI: Ederson, Nélson Semedo, Milan Škriniar, Nathan Aké, Archie Brown, N'Golo Kanté, Mattéo Guendouzi, Talisca, Mason Greenwood, Vedat Muriqi, Kerem Aktürkoğlu

Verdict

Goals are backed and Fenerbahce can at least finish the end of 90 minutes all square, with Greenwood playing another starring role.
