Ben Shelton vs Daniel Merida Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

World No. 5 Ben Shelton gets his Roland Garros campaign up and running when he faces the rising Daniel Merida in the opening round on Monday.

Shelton has been up and down this season, picking up two ATP 500 titles but also losing several matches against lower-ranked opposition. The American is however a slam specialist and always raises his level on the big stage, so I expect some improvement for this encounter.

Merida meanwhile is making his Grand Slam main draw debut after propelling himself into the world's top 100 and will be eager to impress in his debut match against a top 10 opponent.

It's a nice little opportunity for Merida and I think he can make this match competitive. It's going to be hot in Paris today, which means Shelton will get lots of bite off his serve, but also Merida should enjoy some kick off his topspin groundies.

As always, I absolutely love backing at least one tiebreak in any match involving Shelton and the conditions should help both players hold rather comfortably. Merida can snatch a set - possibly even two - but Shelton's great record in Grand Slam opening rounds is hard too ignore.
  • Shelton has seen 1+ tiebreak in 11 of his last 14 matches
  • Shelton has seen 1+ tiebreak in 12 of his last 15 matches vs lower-ranked players
  • Shelton has dropped 1+ set in his last four matches vs lower-ranked players
  • Shelton has won his last 11 Grand Slam R1 matches
  • Merida is playing his first Grand Slam main draw & facing a top 10 player for the first time
  • Merida has won 13 of his last 18 matches at all levels

Shelton vs Merida Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Ben Shelton Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 18-8
  • French Open Record: 4-3
  • Current Ranking: No. 5
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 5 (Nov 2025)

It's been a rather inconsistent season for Shelton, but at the end of the day, he's at his career-high ranking of No. 5 and has secured two ATP titles in the same season for the first time in his career.

Shelton started the year strongly with another quarter-final at the Australian Open, followed by capturing the ATP 500 title in Dallas.

Illness disrupted Shelton's Sunshine Swing at Indian Wells and Miami, but he returned to form in Munich, where he collected his second 500 title of the season.

However, Shelton couldn't kick on with his clay form, losing his opening match in Madrid and Rome to Dino Prizmic and Nikoloz Basilashvili, while he was eliminated in the second round of Hamburg last week by Daniel Altmaier.

Daniel Merida Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 6-4
  • French Open Record: 0-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 86
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 86 (April 2026)

After some strong results on the Challenger Tour, Merida has climbed into the world's top 100 for the first time in 2026 and will now be looking to cement himself as a regular tour player.

The 21-year-old has made an impressive start at doing just that, qualifying and making the Bucharest final in just his second tour-level tournament of the year to kick off the European clay swing.

Merida also made the third round of the Madrid Masters before going down to Stefanos Tsitsipas, but was beaten in his opening match in Rome by Basilashvili.

The Spaniard is making his Grand Slam main draw debut at Roland Garros.
