Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 10 No. 16 Split The Gee

Split The Gee continues to improve and was full of merit scoring second-up on September 27, despite the saddle slipping in running. She still knuckled down late to record a tough win.

Her earlier runs this prep were sound, finishing close up while still doing a few things wrong, so that victory should bring her on nicely.

She gets in light, maps for a soft run, and looks suited to this grade against a mix of lightly raced types.

Still learning but clearly talented, she’s capable of measuring up again at odds if things fall her way.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 10 No. 12 Vestas

Vestas showed real ability as a two-year-old, winning stylishly on debut before being luckless when up in grade at Group 3 level. She didn’t fire in two Melbourne runs last campaign, though both came on firm decks where she never looked comfortable.

Two sharp Cranbourne jump-outs have her ready to go, travelling strongly under her own steam on each occasion. That recent work suggests she’s come back in good order and can give a sight fresh.

The setup looks suitable for her return, and with a cleaner run than she often managed last prep, she can be competitive at this level.

On an each-way basis, Vestas has good claims in the last on Caulfield Guineas Day.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 10 No. 3 Exotique Miss

Well up against it to turn the tables on Tavs (fav) from the Weetwood, but still can figure on an each-way basis.

Was perhaps the hidden run of that Toowoomba feature, with the second-fastest last 400m and 200m of the race.

Also has a decent weight swing on the market elect and a switch to Eagle Farm suits, with four of her five wins coming here.

Competitive at stakes level throughout autumn and winter, getting to 1400m is positive in this second-up assignment.

Murray Bridge Roughie Tip

Murray Bridge Roughie - Race 7 No. 11 San Lucido

Was run off his legs when resuming at 1100m last month and with no prior first-up victories or form at the trip, that wasn’t a shock.

It was an improved effort without luck second-up at Strathalbyn when covering ground but still managing to stick on well.

While they were over further, San Lucido was close with two thirds in this grade at the back end of his prior campaign.

He now goes from having a 3kg apprentice to getting Jason ‘Stubby’ Holder aboard, who is leading the SA jockey ranks this season.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 1 No. 6 Win The Day

It was still a pass mark first-up at Canberra despite being beaten as favourite, with the run suggesting she’ll take plenty of improvement from it.

Win The Day should be able to settle much closer here, especially from a low draw and getting out over a longer trip that’s more suitable.

Her second-up record reads well, and both previous Highway attempts carried merit — she was runner-up at Randwick despite covering ground and ran the fastest last 400m in a Scone edition over autumn.

With that foundation and the right setup, Win The Day ticks enough boxes to appeal at a genuine bolter’s quote.
