Novak Djokovic faces teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca for the first time in a much-anticipated third round Roland Garros showdown. With the early exits of top seeds like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic has a strong chance for his 25th major. Despite not being at his absolute best, Djokovic’s experience in Grand Slams gives him the edge, though Fonseca is expected to put up a fight and possibly win a set. The match is tipped to go over 38.5 games, with Djokovic backed to win in five sets.

Novak Djokovic vs Joao Fonseca Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

We've got a box office third round Roland Garros clash to enjoy on Friday as 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic faces teenage sensation Joao Fonseca for the first time.

It's one of the most-highly anticipated matches in recent memory as Djokovic looks to continue his pursuit of an elusive 25th major title and Fonseca targets the scalp of arguably the greatest player ever to play the sport.

This match takes on new meaning too with the shock elimination of Jannik Sinner in the previous round. Djokovic might never get a better shot at winning another slam, with Carlos Alcaraz also sidelined through injury. I thought prior to the tournament that Djokovic might be prioritising Wimbledon, but Sinner's loss yesterday changes everything and now he should be throwing absolutely everything he has at this unexpected opportunity.

A potential epic is on the cards here. Djokovic, naturally, isn't at the peak of his powers and needed four sets to make it past French hopes Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Valentin Royer. If those two can take a set off Djokovic, then Fonseca absolutely can. The Brazilian claimed his first five-set victory over fellow young gun Dino Prizmic in the previous round, but there's still lingering doubts surrounding his fitness and ability to back it up with another energy-sapping victory.

I'm backing a long match that exceeds 38.5 total games. I expect Fonseca to win at least one set, but even one year shy of 40, Djokovic holds the physical and mental edge - and he obviously has far more experience in these big slam matches. Don't forget Djokovic beat Sinner in five sets at the Australian Open and keeps on reaching the latter stages of the majors - he can't be discounted yet.
  • Djokovic has won 32 of his last 33 Grand Slam third round matches
  • Djokovic holds a 103-17 record at Roland Garros & hasn't lost in the first week since 2009
  • Djokovic holds a 288-14 record at Grand Slams vs players outside the top 20 & hasn't lost to such an opponent since 2018
  • Djokovic has made the semi-finals of his last five Grand Slams
  • Fonseca holds a 1-6 record vs top 10 players
  • Fonseca has won 1+ set in every match he's played this season outside of Alcaraz & Sinner
  • Fonseca is 0-2 in Grand Slam third round matches

Djokovic vs Fonseca Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Novak Djokovic Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 9-3
  • French Open Record: 103-17
  • Current Ranking: No. 4
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 11 (2011)

Djokovic is playing just his fourth tournament of the season as he continues to operate on a limited schedule in the twilight of his career.

The 39-year-old reminded everyone he's still a threat after stunning Sinner in the Australian Open semi-finals at the start of the year, ultimately falling in four sets to Alcaraz in the final.

Djokovic went out to Jack Draper in the R16 of Indian Wells and opted to play just one lead-in tournament on clay ahead of Roland Garros, losing to Dino Prizmic in his Rome opener.

However, Djokovic knows how much his body can take and he's bounced back to some decent form so far in Paris, chopping down the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 5-7 7-5 6-1 6-4 in the first round before taking out Valentin Royer 6-3 6-2 6-7(7) 6-3, recovering from blowing a match point in the third-set tiebreak.

“It was a very difficult match, a very big challenge from the start," Djokovic said. "Credit to him for winning the third set, but I feel it was my fault because I was twice a break up and [attempted] to serve for the match.”

Joao Fonseca Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 12-9
  • French Open Record: 4-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 30
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 24 (Nov 2025)

A back injury stalled his early-season momentum, but Fonseca has quickly recovered ground and arrived at Roland Garros back inside the top 30.

The 19-year-old strung together a solid run across four consecutive events, reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells, the second round in Miami, and back-to-back quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Munich, with each defeat coming against top-10 opposition. He's won at least one set in every match he's played in 2026 outside of those Indian Wells and Miami defeats to Sinner and Alcaraz.

That progress tapered off shortly after, with an early exit in Madrid to fellow rising talent Rafael Jodar, followed by a narrow opening-round loss in Rome, where he fell in a deciding tiebreak to Hamad Medjedovic.

Fonseca then withdrew from Hamburg due to a wrist issue, but there were no lingering concerns in Paris, where he opened with a 7-6(6) 6-4 6-2 victory over Luka Pavlovic, saving a set point in the first set. The Brazilian then produced a brilliant comeback against Dino Prizmic, outlasting his fellow young gun to prevail 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-1 6-2 for his first five-set victory - and earn a shot at the GOAT.

"For me it's just a big pleasure. I'm going to enjoy every moment playing against an idol, the GOAT of the sport. Yeah, hopefully I can do a great match," Fonseca said."Of course, stepping on the court, of course I'm going to respect him, but trying to make my best and win this match."
