This could be one of the most competitive third round showdowns on the men's side at the French Open - both players have enjoyed success on clay this year and remain some of the most consistent performers on tour when operating at full fitness, which both have seemingly got back to this year.

Ruud has been busy over the last month, making the final of Rome and semi-finals in Geneva before surviving an epic opening round in Paris in five sets against Roman Safiullin, while Paul picked up the Houston silverware and is hoping to repeat his run to to the French Open quarter-finals from last season.

Both players love a baseline grind, but while Paul is very good on clay, it's clear this surface favours Ruud. Grand Slams and the best-of-five format also looks to give the Norwegian an advantage, with Ruud winning all three meetings at the majors - two of which have come in a deciding fifth set.

It hasn't been the best last year or so on tour for Ruud and he briefly dropped out of the top 20 for a while there.

However, the Norwegian looks to have regained his best form and is once again doing damage again on the clay - and with Sinner and Alcaraz both out of the picture, he's arguably in the top four favourites for the title after two previous runner-up finishes.

Ruud has gone 15-4 on clay this swing, highlighted by a run to the final in Rome and semi-final finish in Geneva.

The 27-year-old was in huge trouble against Safiullin in his French Open first round, struggling heavily in the heat and dropping the fourth set 0-6 before recovering to complete a 6-2 7-6(5) 5-7 0-6 6-2 victory.

Ruud recovered and responded brilliantly in the second round against the dangerous Hamad Medjedovic, subduing the big Serbian in a comfortable 6-3 6-2 6-4 triumph.

Paul was plagued by niggling injuries throughout the back half of last year, but he's returned to full fitness and should be pushing towards the top 15 again this season.

It's been another remarkably consistent season for Paul - he won the Houston title and made two further finals on the clay of Hamburg last week and also in Delray Beach, along with a semi-final in Adelaide and quarter-final in Miami.

Paul earned some good clay wins over Alex de Minaur and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Hamburg and hasn't suffered from any fatigue since arriving in Paris.

The 29-year-old has advanced into the third round for the loss of just one set, beating Rinky Hijikata 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 before a dominant 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Sonego.
