The Turnbull Stakes is the last Flemington Group 1 before the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival begins a month later and being run one week before Caulfield Guineas Day, along with it being staged a week after the AFL season finishes, this is generally when the crowds start hitting the track.
Via Sistina (barrier 12) will use this set weights and penalties race as another lead-up for the Cox Plate, which is run three weeks later and she's looking to atone from a disappointing fifth in the Makybe Diva Stakes, although she was on heavy ground via that second-up outing.
Her Australian form prior to the last start defeat was strong and at $3 with EliteBet, the Chris Waller-trained mare is favourite to win the 2024 Turnbull Stakes.
Waller has an excellent record in the Turnbull Stakes, having prepared five of the last nine winners, while Soulcombe finished third in this race last year before contresting the cups.
Eliyass (barrier 16) is three-from-three in Australia and overall, the gelding hasn't missed the top two from eleven career starts (nine wins).
He's handled both good and heavy ground in Sydney, while all three wins for the Waterhouse & Bott yard have come over 2000m.
Buckaroo (barrier 8) was gelded ahead of this campaign and the son of Fastnet Rock is on a hat-trick bid following wins in the Chelmsford Stakes and Underwood Stakes.
Queensland Derby winner Warmonger (barrier 10) creates some interest over 2000m second-up following a nice return over a mile in the Maykbe Diva Stakes and this run will top him off nicely for the Caulfield Cup.
A total of 16 runners have accepted for the 2024 Turnbull Stakes.
