Ballarat takes over the Victorian midweek racing focus on Wednesday, September 30, with a competitive card featuring several lightly raced types and runners building towards peak fitness.
The program offers a good mix of maiden and benchmark races, with a number of progressive gallopers bringing strong recent form into the meeting.

Ballarat Roughie - Race 3 No. 9 Hoffstadt
Although he did not make it to the races as a two-year-old, Hoffstadt was up and trialling early last season before being given more time, with two autumn jump-outs at Pakenham followed by another break.
There was enough to like about his lead-up work ahead of his September 17 debut at Mornington, including a quiet 950m hit-out at Traralgon, while the 1000m of his September 1 trial looked too sharp once the sprint went on and he was still good through the line.
The Angus Townley-trained son of Castelvecchio was sent around at a big price for his first race-day appearance and, after getting back in a race that favoured those close to the speed, he worked home strongly for a fourth-of-10 finish.
Hoffstadt recorded the fastest closing sectionals of the race along with the second-fastest final 200m of the entire program, which adds plenty of merit to the debut performance.
He looks certain to appreciate getting over more ground and should continue to furnish with racing, so the rise to 1400m at start two, combined with natural improvement from his first race-day outing, gives him genuine appeal at a big price.
Veolia BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 4)
Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 9 Perfect Night
The scratching of Kingsbury has made the task considerably easier for Perfect Night, with the Hayes-trained mare now heading the market and looking well suited stepping to 1400m second-up.
Her return at Geelong on September 11 was full of merit, with the four-year-old held up before making ground into a third-of-12 finish, while Michael Dee takes the ride here and is striking at 25% for the Hayes yard this season.
Although her overall strike rate reads just one win from 10 starts, she was consistently thereabouts in useful company during her three-year-old season, culminating her first preparation with a fifth-of-nine finish in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes.
She narrowly missed over this distance second-up last campaign before going one better at Sale on March 29, defeating the useful Angling Angel, who was subsequently in the market for three Group races in Adelaide.
Both of her preparations to date have eventually stretched to 2000m, but a mile may prove closer to her optimum range going forward, and she still looks very competitive at seven furlongs in a winnable BM62 second-up.
Manhari BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Ballarat Best Bet - Race 5 No. 5 Yauson
A progressive and lightly raced son of So You Think from the Waterhouse and Bott yard, Yauson put the writing on the wall with a strong first-up second at Geelong on August 28 behind the talented In'Kantosstar.
That winner had too much brilliance for him on the day, but the form was strengthened when In'Kantosstar went on to complete a hat-trick by winning again at the Caulfield Heath meeting on September 16.
Yauson progressed sharply from the Geelong return and justified a short price when stepping to 1600m at Seymour on September 10, bolting in by 4.25 lengths.
The form from that Seymour race has worked out particularly well, with the third, fourth and sixth-place finishers all winning at their next starts, including Pariah Pearl, who then scored impressively in a metropolitan BM74 at Cranbourne last Friday.
While this is technically a rise in grade, the strength of that recent form suggests Yauson is well placed to handle it and, being only third-up at just his sixth career start, he looks capable of progressing again.
Hygain Edge BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Ballarat Value Bet - Race 8 No. 11 Hotspur Reale
Connections will be hoping for a kinder campaign with Hotspur Reale, a son of Calyx who recorded a first-up win at Wangaratta when resuming in December last year.
He defeated Zuppa Inglese on that occasion, with that mare going on to win two of her next three starts and also place in metropolitan company over the winter.
Although unable to salute again through the preparation, Hotspur Reale held his form with five subsequent placings across summer and early autumn, including a metropolitan second behind the smart Oliveanotherday and an unlucky Cranbourne runner-up effort behind Tookay Pete on January 22.
Trainer Brian McGrath has put plenty of work into him ahead of this fresh assignment, with three jump-outs completed across August and September, and he moved well in each, including the latest when getting the better of the handy Sweetheart and Cooly.
Hotspur Reale has won first-up previously, finds a suitable country BM66 to resume in and can be supported on an each-way basis.
