Warrnambool Best Bet - Race 2 No. 1 Black Peppermint

A consistent preparation without a win has Black Peppermint knocking on the door, including a strong second in metropolitan company at Caulfield Heath when second-up.

The veteran competed at Benchmark 74 level on that occasion and heads into this assignment after another solid performance, finishing third over 2440m at Geelong.

Ridden cold in a Benchmark 78 on Good ground, he was beaten less than two-and-a-half lengths and now finds a clear drop in grade.

The son of Americain is versatile across Good and Soft surfaces, while the extra distance poses no concern after he was narrowly denied in a metropolitan event over this trip at Moonee Valley in March last year.

Patrick Payne has his eight-year-old well placed here, and with the stable boasting a strong record when combining with Will Gordon, Black Peppermint gets an ideal opportunity to break through this preparation.

Fabriweld Constructions BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Warrnambool Roughie - Race 6 No. 1 Mr Tickles

Three strong efforts from four starts this preparation make Mr Tickles an interesting roughie back at country level.

His campaign includes a Benchmark 62 victory over this distance at Cranbourne in July, which he followed five days later with another good performance when finishing fourth at Moe.

The gelding can be forgiven for his latest heavy defeat at Caulfield Heath, where he was sent around at big odds in much stronger Benchmark 74 metropolitan company.

Freshened since that run, he returns to a more suitable level here and, although barrier eight is a slight concern, any downgrade from the current Good 4 would further enhance his chances despite already being a dual winner on Good ground.

Mitchell Leek’s representative goes well for apprentice Hayley Spitse and, having also performed strongly on his only previous Warrnambool appearance, looks capable of producing another competitive effort.

Sungold Milk BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Warrnambool Value Bet - Race 7 No. 2 Haiiro

Two wins last season highlighted the improvement made by Haiiro, including a first-up success at Kilmore in March over 1600m.

The gelding took out that Benchmark 56 on a Soft surface by more than a length before putting together consecutive third-place finishes through the preparation.

He was then outclassed when finishing down the field in the Listed VRC St Leger over 2800m at Flemington, but the son of Tosen Stardom has shown encouraging improvement through his jump-outs ahead of this return.

The sharp drop in distance holds no fears given he raced prominently when resuming last preparation, while barrier two should allow him to settle handy again and the forecast Good ground is no issue after he broke his maiden on a sound surface at Warrnambool last October.

Shane Jackson has a strong record at his home track, and with Haiiro returning under conditions that should suit, he looks capable of making his presence felt at an each-way price.

Warrnambool Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Mr Sioux

Purchased at the UK breeze-up sales in 2025, Irish-bred gelding Mr Sioux broke through at just his second career start when winning at this venue in August.

The son of Sioux Nation scored by half a length over this distance on Heavy ground after being sent around as a $1.45 favourite, having debuted with a runner-up finish at Bendigo at the end of July.

His most recent appearance produced a fourth-place finish over 1500m in Benchmark 62 company at Mornington, where he was beaten four-and-a-half lengths before a post-race endoscopic examination revealed mucus.

Good ground appeared no issue despite that defeat, while an inside barrier gives him every chance to secure a favourable position in running.

Any track downgrade would be a further positive, and with John Allen reunited after partnering him in his maiden victory, Mr Sioux looks well placed to double his career tally.
