Gatton Tips October 1

Congrats To 2025 - 2026 LVTC Winning Premiership Jockey – Brandon Lerena Benchmark 58 Handicap Tips (Race 3)

Gatton Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Tara’s Reward

A breakthrough win this preparation came at Warwick three weeks ago for Tara’s Reward, with the Jack Bruce-trained gelding proving too strong over 800m in Benchmark 60 company and scoring by a narrow margin.

That victory came on Good ground, but the six-year-old had shown enough on a Soft 5 at Ipswich at his previous appearance when finishing fourth in a stronger Benchmark 65 after tracking the speed.

The Ipswich form has held up nicely with runners behind him subsequently performing well, adding further merit to a campaign that has now produced a win and another solid effort from his last two starts.

Barrier six should allow Archie McColm to settle close to the early speed without having to do excessive work, which suits a horse who has shown his best form when racing prominently.

Jack Bruce boasts a 29.4% strike rate at Gatton and has his stable operating at a healthy level this season, so his representative looks well placed to chase back-to-back victories.

Gatton Value Bet - Race 4 No. 1 Pour Benn

Stronger company has been the theme for Pour Benn throughout this preparation, with his best performance coming three starts ago when finishing fourth at Ipswich in a Benchmark 0-62 after jumping from a wide barrier and being beaten less than two lengths.

That Ipswich contest has since produced subsequent winners, while there were genuine excuses at his following start when he was hampered before finishing down the field in Class 1 company on a Soft 5.

His sole career victory came in emphatic fashion at Kembla Grange in March, where the son of Ace High handled a Soft 7 beautifully to win a $50,000 maiden over 1500m by three-and-a-half lengths.

The five-year-old tackles 2000m for the first time here and needs to put a below-par Sunshine Coast effort behind him, but the return to restricted 0-58 company represents a more suitable assignment.

Jimmy Downes’ gelding draws barrier two with apprentice William Galloway taking 3kg off, and given the class relief and proven ability on rain-affected ground, Pour Benn looks capable of improving sharply at an each-way price.

Gatton Roughie - Race 6 No. 8 Ocean Joy

A proven wet-track profile gives Ocean Joy some appeal at a price, with the Headwater mare recording one win and three further placings from six appearances on Soft ground.

All three starts this preparation have come on Good going, with her latest producing the best performance of the campaign when finishing fifth over 1015m at Toowoomba on September 5.

Slowly away and ridden cold from barrier one on that occasion, she was still last approaching the turn before making up noticeable ground late to finish less than three lengths from the winner.

Barrier nine should not be a major concern given that racing pattern, while the return to a Soft surface is a significant positive as she tackles wet ground for the first time since last November.

Lynda Powell’s mare failed to fire in her only previous Gatton appearance, but that came in stronger Benchmark 62 company and she looks capable of producing a much better result under more suitable conditions here.

Gatton Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Water Lad

Five top-two finishes from his previous six starts before the latest run underline how consistently Water Lad has been racing, with the James Moore-trained gelding building a strong profile in this grade.

His Beaudesert run on September 17 is best forgiven after he tracked the speed before being shuffled back approaching the turn, then remained held up from the 200m until close to the finish and was effectively denied a clear crack at them.

Earlier form included a narrow runner-up finish in a Benchmark 0-58 at Warwick on his penultimate appearance, continuing a consistent sequence that had produced several near misses.

The son of Headwater has already won over this 1400m journey and any drying of the Soft 6 would further enhance his prospects, while barrier six gives William Galloway every opportunity to find a suitable position.

With the apprentice taking over for the first time and Water Lad returning to a race where he should encounter fewer traffic problems, he looks well placed to provide the James Moore stable with another strong showing.
