Sha Tin Tips October 1
Chengdu Handicap Tips (Race 4)
Sha Tin Roughie - Race 4 No. 11 Alabama Song
Two wins from 18 starts do not make Alabama Song an obvious betting proposition, but both victories have come at Sha Tin and one was over this 1400m course and distance.
The John Size-trained gelding has raced six times over the trip for a win and looks better suited getting back to seven furlongs than he has in several of his sprint assignments.
His course-and-distance success last April showed the type of performance he is capable of producing in this grade, and there is enough exposed form around him to suggest another spike would put him right in the finish.
Andrea Atzeni takes the ride at just 54.5kg, giving the four-year-old a favourable weight setup despite drawing barrier eight.
He needs to improve on recent form, but returning to his preferred track and distance at the right end of the weights gives Alabama Song enough upside to warrant consideration at a bigger price.
Hangzhou Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Sha Tin Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Jedi Spurs
Jedi Spurs showed immediate ability last season with a win and a second from his only two starts, and the lightly raced three-year-old resumes in a suitable Class 4 over the straight 1000m.
The David Hayes-trained gelding scored over this course and distance before finishing runner-up behind Almighty Warrior over 1200m, giving him a strong platform for his return.
Thursday marks his first appearance for 89 days, but the profile suggests there is natural improvement to come after such a short juvenile campaign.
Brenton Avdulla retains the ride from barrier six, and although Jedi Spurs carries 61kg, that impost is not a huge factor over this journey and the straight course should give him every chance to find his rhythm.
With proven course-and-distance form and significantly more upside than most of his rivals, Jedi Spurs looks the runner to beat first-up.
Jinan Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Sha Tin Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 3 Super Goldendragon
A strong finish to last season has Super Goldendragon well placed to resume over 1800m, with his final four runs producing two wins, a second and a third.
The gelding broke through over 2200m at Happy Valley before finishing second over this trip at Sha Tin, then added a third and another victory over 2000m before heading for a break.
That sequence confirmed his staying credentials while also showing he can be effective back at 1800m, where he has raced four times for one second.
Barrier four is another positive for Derek Leung, who has been aboard throughout the gelding’s best Hong Kong form and should be able to secure an economical position.
Super Goldendragon resumes with 60.5kg, but the combination of proven distance form, a soft draw and an improving profile gives him a strong chance to continue where he left off.
Tianjin Handicap Tips (Race 10)
Sha Tin Value Bet - Race 10 No. 14 Master Lucky
Master Lucky returns to Class 3 after building an excellent record through the lower grade, with two wins, three seconds and a third from 10 career starts.
His best work has come at Sha Tin, where he has recorded both career victories, and the 1400m trip has produced a win and three further placings from four attempts.
The John Size-trained gelding closed last season with a course-and-distance victory on June 27 before returning on September 6 and finishing a strong second from barrier 13 under 61kg.
He now rises into Class 3 but drops sharply to 53.5kg, while barrier five gives Andrea Atzeni a much better tactical setup than he had first-up.
That combination of a major weight drop, proven 1400m form and an economical draw makes Master Lucky an appealing value chance against the stronger company.
