Illawarra Grange hosts Thursday racing with a program that mixes lightly raced maidens, progressive gallopers and exposed types looking to find their right grade.

Illawarra Grange Value Bet - Race 1 No. 11 Rubilace

There was solid market support for Rubilace first-up at Wagga on August 27, but the Theresa Bateup-trained six-year-old failed to handle the Heavy 10 conditions and also pulled up lame after the race, giving her a genuine excuse for the below-par performance.

The local mare now gets to 1450m after twice being tried around seven furlongs at the end of her previous campaign, including a fourth behind Cabbucio in a much stronger provincial maiden here in March.

That Cabbucio form has held up well, with the winner going on to win again before returning this season with back-to-back provincial placings, which adds further merit to Rubilace finishing only 1.2 lengths away that day.

She has shown glimpses of enough ability despite having had plenty of chances, and that is hardly a major knock in this field with Creator Of Worlds and Classic Tews also well-exposed maidens.

A low draw gives Jess Taylor the chance to be more positive over the longer trip, and with Taylor having partnered Rubilace seven times previously, including a narrow runner-up finish last winter, she looks capable of giving this a shake at a big price.

Illawarra Grange Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Vatican

A $1.2 million purchase at the 2025 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Vatican showed early ability when finishing fifth in the $400,000 Inglis Nursery on debut last December before being given plenty of time to develop into his three-year-old season.

Two trials preceded his return, including a Rosehill win on September 8, before he drifted noticeably in betting at Canterbury on September 16 and finished third after racing very waywardly under pressure in the straight.

The performance was better than the margin suggests given he repeatedly shifted under pressure yet still finished ahead of stablemate Snitzel's Girl, who was unlucky at Rosehill on Wednesday, while Keen To Exceed and Crescent King had some strong prior references.

There is also depth to that form through Better By Far, who had split Ciaron's Star and Persian Wonder at Randwick, with Ciaron's Star Group placed at her last two outings and Persian Wonder a Group 3 winner on September 12.

Blinkers go on to sharpen Vatican up, and the drop back to provincial maiden grade looks ideal with James McDonald staying aboard as Chris Waller searches for a confidence-building breakthrough.

The son of Reliable Man should furnish over more ground as this campaign wears on, but his class can take him a long way in a provincial BM64 that does not appear to have a great deal of depth.

Sent to Chris Waller after three starts in New Zealand, Donatello was well supported on his Australian debut at Randwick Kensington on April 27 and finished a competitive fourth-of-eight before again holding his place in the market despite tackling BM72 company as a maiden at Randwick on May 23.

He was again thereabouts in that stronger assignment, finishing only 0.8 lengths from Agent Zero over 1800m, before connections elected against pursuing a Queensland Derby path and dropped him back to maiden company at Hawkesbury.

That move produced the desired confidence boost on June 4, with Donatello justifying short-priced favouritism and winning the 1800m maiden by 1.2 lengths before heading to the paddock.

He has looked up to the mark in two Rosehill trials leading into this return, including his latest over 1300m where his work through and past the line was encouraging, and he looks a galloper capable of measuring up in better company than this.
