The Caulfield Guineas 2025 is set to feature strong three-year-old contenders, including Autumn Boy, Beiwacht, and Vinrock, each with notable lead-up performances. The 1600m Group 1 race continues its reputation as a stallion-maker, offering a platform for future champions. Prior to the Golden Rose, Autumn Boy (barrier 1) was the clear standout among the Guineas hopefuls and he remains highly regarded despite being well held second-up in that Group 1 feature.

With back-to-back victories as a juvenile and an encouraging return on September 13, the colt looks capable of finding further improvement, and the rise to 1600m is expected to play to his strengths.

Autumn Boy shares the spotlight with stablemate Wodeton (barrier 16), who is also prepared by Chris Waller.

While Wodeton hasn’t quite delivered on his early hype, with his only victory coming via an impressive debut success in January, the son of Wootton Bassett has still performed consistently in seven subsequent starts.

He’s finished runner-up in two of three runs this campaign, including his latest effort in the Golden Rose.

Vinrock (barrier 14) has won four of six starts, highlighted by his Group 1 Champagne Stakes triumph in April before heading for a spell.

His form has been mixed this preparation, though there were genuine excuses — unsuited by the fast tempo over 1200m first-up and enduring little luck last time out when well supported.

West Of Swindon (barrier 16) proved his 1600m credentials with a last-start win in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley, while the dual stakes-placed Navy Pilot (barrier 2) arrives off a strong second-up victory over 1400m.

Highvol (barrier 18) went two-from-two in his first campaign, with solid form around those two Flemington victories.

He’s three runs into this preparation and produced an improved showing last time out in the Stutt Stakes where the blinkers were applied.

Caulfield Guineas Winners

First run in 1881, the Caulfield Guineas stands as one of Melbourne’s oldest and most prestigious Group 1 races.

Although temporarily staged at Flemington during the wartime years, the Guineas has long called Caulfield home and remains the ultimate prize for many of Australia’s elite three-year-olds — particularly colts who later make their mark at stud.

Run over a mile since its inception, the Guineas was officially elevated to Group 1 status in 1979 when the nation’s top races were reclassified. That year it was won by Runaway Kid, following the great Manikato’s triumph twelve months earlier.

Renowned as a stallion-making race, the honour roll features legends such as All Too Hard, Lonhro and Redoute’s Choice. It has also proven a strong form reference for staying features, with sixteen Guineas winners going on to complete the Caulfield Guineas–Victoria Derby double — most recently Helenus in 2002.

Recent winners include Golden Mile (2022), Griff (2023) and Private Life (2024), continuing the tradition of excellence that defines this iconic mile classic.
