Doomben Roughie - Race 1 No. 16 Pass The Peak
Aside from a start-five failure at the end of his first preparation, which can be forgiven on a Heavy 10 surface, Pass The Peak has done very little wrong.
He improved as the distances increased through summer, with the highlight coming at his fourth race-day appearance when breaking through over 1700m at Ipswich after two competitive performances at Doomben.
The son of Alpine Eagle simply lacked the turn of foot when resuming over 1350m on August 19, but it was noteworthy that there was support for him at a big price and he stuck on well in second.
While it is still relatively early in the preparation to be stepping straight to a strong 1650m, he is clearly a galloper who needs these distances and is likely to get over 2000m once deeper into his second campaign.
The first emergency is guaranteed a start following a string of scratchings, and from a low draw Mitchell Aitken should be able to have him among the first few pairs, giving Pass The Peak every chance to run a big race second-up in an event that lacks standouts.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 7 No. 18 Headhunter
Two of Headhunter's three career wins have come at Doomben, and while remaining at 1350m fourth-up may be a slight knock given his latest victory came over 1630m in January, he brings a strong fitness base into this Benchmark 72.
The son of Vancouver has had very little go his way in three winter appearances, opening the campaign with consecutive thirds, including one over this track-and-trip on July 11 when producing the fourth-fastest final 200m of the entire program.
He was then sent out a single-figure chance on August 26, but the handbrake was firmly applied early from a wide draw as he was dragged back to a hopeless position in a slowly run race.
Despite that setup, Headhunter worked home with the second-fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m of the card, indicating he is going considerably better than the result suggests.
He has not drawn perfectly again, but the alley is kinder than what he has been dealing with and, with Jag Guthmann-Chester aboard, a more positive ride would not surprise from a horse who has shown he can take up a position.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 8 Zouper Fund
Brisbane looks the right jurisdiction for Zouper Fund to try and rediscover winning form, with Ciaron Maher happy to place his horses wherever the opportunity suits.
The stable's Doomben record over the past 12 months has been especially strong, producing 13 winners at better than a 23% strike rate and an ROI north of 71%.
Zouper Fund resumed well in much stronger company in Melbourne on June 13 before his subsequent Caulfield and Randwick efforts were a little disappointing, but there was more merit in his Queensland debut on August 29.
The six-year-old did plenty of the donkey work behind the leaders and was left vulnerable a long way from home, yet still stuck on well to finish runner-up over 1400m.
From a low draw at Doomben, he may be better suited around the tighter circuit where he can conserve energy before using his sprint, and while this is technically a rise to Benchmark 85 level, the race does not appear significantly harder than what he faced a fortnight ago and he carries 2kg less.

Doomben Best Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Unloading
Raw talent was evident throughout Unloading's first preparation, which opened with an Eagle Farm debut victory on March 21 after attracting support at a big price.
He backed that up with a third at Doomben, recording the fastest final 200m of the entire April 11 program, before finishing well beaten in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic on May 9.
That final effort can be forgiven at the end of his first campaign, particularly with the race dominated by St Gotthard, who now heads the market for Saturday's Group 2 Run To The Rose in Sydney.
Given time to furnish ahead of his second preparation, the Brett Dodson-trained galloper impressed in a Grafton trial on August 29, making ground stylishly late to win the 946m heat and suggesting he is ready to fire fresh.
Unloading looks to possess genuine class and appeals at a nice price first-up under Angela Jones, who returns from a four-month injury absence, with her 19 Doomben winners over the past 12 months returning an ROI of 20.5%.
