M&J Chickens Handicap Tips (Race 4)
Morphettville Best Bet - Race 4 No. 13 Harmonic Dancer
We haven't seen Noel Callow return to his absolute best just yet since beginning his new Adelaide stint at the start of the season, which is understandable after spending 12 months away from the scene.
He should prove one of the stronger riders in Adelaide once he settles in, and he has already combined with the Stokes stable for four winners since his return.
Callow was aboard Harmonic Dancer when the four-year-old resumed on August 29, where he was beaten as favourite but could hardly have done much more after a wide barrier forced him back and left him covering ground throughout.
In the end he provided a perfect tow into the race for eventual winner Daisydoo, but still put a big margin on third, and anything resembling that performance would make him awfully hard to beat in what looks a fairly thin affair.
Harmonic Dancer frustrated punters several times at short odds last season, but he remains lightly raced and produced a big peak when bolting in second-up at Morphettville last November, so I'm willing to trust the fresh run.
Ule Hoof Oil Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Morphettville Value Bet - Race 5 No. 11 Gazelle
Apprentice Alysha Warren will be keen to give Gazelle a better account of herself this time after the mare endured a torrid run on the Parks circuit when five weeks between starts on August 22.
She did far too much work and overdid things early, so it was no surprise to see her tire late, while she has since returned to the jump-outs and was solid in a 950m heat at Murray Bridge on September 3.
Gazelle has shown improvement throughout this campaign, which began with a comfortable maiden victory at Mount Gambier on May 22 before she added another win at Murray Bridge third-up.
Nothing went right in the two metropolitan runs that followed, with wide barriers proving costly, and a line can be put through both of those recent Adelaide appearances.
She has settled back in each of her past four starts, but has also drawn wide on every occasion, and from a much better gate in an easier assignment overall, Warren should be able to have Gazelle closer in the run and enjoy a far more economical passage.
Sportsbet W H Wylie Handicap Tips (Race 7)
Morphettville Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 8 Bassett Babe
Smooth Chino heads the early market for this Listed affair after moving across from Western Australia with trainer Indiana Weinert, and while the five-year-old has 62kg to carry, his record in the west was imposing and an August 27 trial suggested he is ready to fire fresh.
He has to be respected, but Bassett Babe receives 8kg from the favourite and may also possess more upside, making her a major threat in this company.
The Andrew Gluyas-trained sprinter opened her account with two strong wins earlier in the year under Taylor Johnstone, who returns to the saddle on Saturday.
There were some queries going into her August 15 resumption on the Parks track after she was very slow away in an August 4 trial, but she produced a performance full of merit when eased back from a wide draw, forced to sustain a wide run on Heavy ground and still finding enough to score.
This is a tougher assignment, but further improvement should come second-up and, although she handled the testing ground last time, her earlier performances suggest she may be even better suited on a firmer surface.
Festival Hire Handicap Tips (Race 9)
Morphettville Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Sir Myka
Sir Myka is a double-figure quote in the finale and, while that price is understandable on exposed form after two well-beaten runs this campaign, there are genuine excuses for both efforts.
The Travis Doudle-trained gelding simply has not appeared to get through the Soft 7 tracks he has encountered so far, and a sharp turnaround would not surprise if Morphettville continues to improve from its current Soft 6 rating.
He is partnered by Ben Price, who has combined with Doudle for five winners from 12 rides this season, and only needs to rediscover the level he showed last campaign to be competitive here.
His most recent run on a Good track at Morphettville produced a third-place finish at Group 2 level during the Adelaide Carnival, with that race also producing the very smart Extragalactic.
The son of Doubtland arrived at that Group 2 placing off a victory during the Oakbank Carnival and, while he is obviously risky given what he has shown this preparation, we're getting a price and there's significantly more in his favour on Saturday.
