Daniil Medvedev starts his French Open campaign against Adam Walton, with both players not at their best on clay. Despite Medvedev's previous early exits and recent struggles on the surface, he’s favored to win. Walton, although a wildcard with a limited clay track record, has pushed top players before—including Medvedev in their head-to-head. The matchup may be closer than it looks, and betting on over 27.5 total games is recommended, as both players’ previous matches at slams often exceed this mark.

Daniil Medvedev vs Adam Walton Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Daniil Medvedev gets his French Open campaign underway on Tuesday when he faces Aussie wildcard Adam Walton in the first round.

It's obviously no secret that Medvedev isn't the biggest fan of clay and for a top player, his record at Roland Garros is very average, losing in the first round a total of six times - including last year against Cameron Norrie. Medvedev also suffered a shock double bagel (0-6 0-6) defeat on the clay of Monte Carlo in the lead-up to Matteo Berrettini, further illustrating just how bad he can be on this surface.

Meanwhile, it's safe to say Walton would rather be playing on any other surface too - the Aussie benefitted from receiving the reciprocal wildcard agreement between the French and Australian associations and prepared for this tournament by playing Asian Challengers on hardcourt.

However, Walton certainly hasn't disgraced himself on clay - he made the second round in Paris last year before taking Andrey Rublev to two tiebreaks, while he also beat Martin Landaluce at the Madrid Masters earlier this year. Additionally, Walton has troubled Medvedev in their past meetings, winning one and narrowly going down in the other.

I look at this matchup and think Medvedev should be winning this comfortably. But Walton and his rather strange game seems to give him problems - the Russian finds it tough to move the Aussie around and dictate off his flat ball. Medvedev certainly wins this, but backing Walton to push this Over 27.5 total games.
  • Medvedev's last five completed French Open matches have seen Over 27.5 games
  • Walton has seen Over 27.5 games in all three previous French Open matches
  • Walton has seen Over 27.5 games in all 12 previous Grand Slam main draw matches
  • Walton has a 1-10 record vs top 20 players (one win vs Medvedev)
  • Medvedev has dropped a set in his last two clay matches vs players outside the top 90
  • Medvedev has gone to a deciding set in four of his last five completed matches

Level at 1-1, with both meetings coming last year. Walton stunned Medvedev in Cincinnati before the Russian edged out a tough win in Almaty.

Daniil Medvedev Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 24-8
  • French Open Record: 10-9
  • Current Ranking: No. 8
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 1 (2022)

Medvedev has clawed his way back into the top 10, so it's largely been a positive season so far.

The 30-year-old has won two ATP titles in Brisbane and Dubai, along with finishing runner-up at Indian Wells.

Medvedev has also been impressive against the world's best in Jannik Sinner, taking the Italian to two tiebreaks in that Indian Wells final and also taking a set in the recent Rome semi-finals.

However, the clay swing has also been marred with poor performances, including that aforementioned double bagel defeat to Berrettini in Monte Carlo and a loss in the R16 of Madrid to Flavio Cobolli.

Medvedev's best French Open result was a quarter-final in 2021, with the Russian going out in R1 last year to Cam Norrie.

Adam Walton Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 4-9
  • French Open Record: 1-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 97
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 74 (Oct 2025)

After coming through the college route, Walton has done a tremendous job to establish himself as a top 100 players over the last 12 months or so.

Still have my doubts as to how long Walton can stay inside that bracket - he looks like a player that will consistently fluctuate between Challengers and tour-level, but he's doing a good job so far.

The Aussie has only managed four tour-level wins in 2026, with three of those coming at Masters level in Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid.

Walton opted to play hardcourt Challengers in Asia before Roland Garros, reaching the final in Jiujiang and the quarter-finals in Wuxi.
