The 2022 Toorak Handicap is a major mile handicap run at Caulfield over the Melbourne Spring Carnival, with this year's edition proving a lead up to the Cox Plate for one horse.

A live Cox Plate chance, I Wish I Win (barrier 13) gets his chance to showcase his talent by winning the Toorak after bolting in last start like a very good horse.

Front-runner Gentleman Roy (barrier four) will be the horse to catch after leading all the way in the Sandown Stakes last start, while Tuvalu (barrier one) gets the added fitness benefit from last start's third placing in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Pinstriped (barrier 14) closed home well last start behind Gentleman Roy and looks the horse with x-factor.

Callsign Mav (barrier 11) & Hilal (barrier two) looks the outside chances in the race.

Toorak Handicap Winners

The first Toorak Handicap was run and won 1881 by Josephine.

The quality of recent winners doesn’t reflect the history of the race, with Galilee, Gunsynd and More Joyous among the former champions of the event.

The Toorak Handicap is a ballot exempt race for the Caulfield Cup but history suggests it is somewhat of a poisoned chalice with Leilani the last horse to complete the Toorak/Caulfield cup double in 1974.

Champion stayer Galilee was able to win the Toorak Handicap/Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup treble in 1966, a feat which has never been replicated.
