Tien made the China Open final on his debut in Beijing last year and he returns 12 months later firmly established inside the top 20 and with an outside shot of qualifying for the year-end finals.

Meanwhile, Hurkacz has endured a difficult season after knee surgery last year, but he's picked things up and coming off a runner-up showing in Chengdu.

However, resetting and playing two days on will be a tough ask for Hurkacz and he could easily struggle physically here.

Tien makes you play so many balls and makes minimal errors - he'll want to extend the baseline exchanges and gradually grind the big Pole down.

I can see at least one tiebreak and that's good value at plus money, but Tien should be too strong and cover a -2.5 line on his way to the second round.

Fantastic season for Tien and he remains underrated, performing better and more consistently than other hyped youngsters such as Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik.

After breaking onto the tour with a bang last year, Tien has backed it up nicely throughout 2026, including reaching quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, along with capturing his second career title on the clay of Geneva.

It was a solid summer for Tien in North America, with the 20-year-old making the Canada Masters semi-finals before beating Mensik on his way to the US Open R16.

Tien beat Mensik again in Davis Cup and also earned a recent win over Flavio Cobolli at the Laver Cup.

The American will be hoping to emulate his debut appearance at the China Open from last year, where he advanced to the final before going down to Jannik Sinner.
