Sixteen-year-old Xinran Sun makes her WTA main-draw debut at the Beijing China Open, coming off an outstanding junior season with a US Open win and World No. 1 ranking. Sun’s opponent, Eva Lys, is struggling for form after an injury-plagued year and faces pressure to defend her ranking. Sun, given a wildcard, is seen as a real threat to claim her maiden tour-level victory in front of home fans. The match promises excitement, with Sun poised to potentially announce herself on the pro stage.

Eva Lys vs Xinran Sun WTA Beijing Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Rising prodigy Xinran Sun makes her WTA debut in front of her home fans at the China Open on Thursday night and the junior World No. 1 has a great chance to secure a famous victory against a slumping Eva Lys.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Sun to officially announce herself as a star of the future.

The 16-year-old is coming off a stellar year on the junior circuit, where she made the final of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon before winning the US Open title last month, hitting the No. 1 ranking during that period.

Now, Sun has received a wildcard into her first WTA tournament and she's received a great draw.

Lys picked up an injury at the start of the year and she's struggled ever since. The German hasn't been past the second round of any tournament all year and she's picked up just six tour-level victories.

There's no doubt Lys is down on confidence and now she has the pressure of defending quarter-final points from last year's China Open. If she loses this match, she will drop out of the world's top 130 and then it's back to qualifying and the ITF circuit.

So Lys is under all the pressure and Sun has nothing to lose. I think the Chinese youngster can snatch a set and a maiden WTA win isn't out of the question.
  • Lys has a 6-16 record at tour-level this season
  • Lys has a 2-9 record at WTA 1000 level this season
  • Lys has dropped 1+ set in 22 of her last 26 matches
  • Sun is playing her first WTA tournament
  • Sun has made three junior slam finals in a row

Lys vs Sun Head To Head

This will be the first meeting between the pair.

Eva Lys Form Analysis

  • 2026 WTA Record: 6-16
  • WTA Beijing Record: 4-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 102
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 39 (Jan 2026)

Lys had a great breakout season last year and her quarter-final run at the China Open was what helped her break into the top 50 and reach a career-high ranking of No. 39.

The 24-year-old beat the likes of Elena Rybakina and Iva Jovic to make her first WTA 1000 quarter-final, going down to Coco Gauff.

It looked like Lys could kick on and perhaps break into the top 30 this year, but she suffered an injury in January and she's struggled to get back to her previous level.

Indeed, Lys has only won six matches at tour-level this year and there's nothing to suggest the German is about to turn things around. Lys lost to the World No. 317 in Sao Paulo before going down 6-1 6-2 to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round of Seoul last week.

Xinran Sun Form Analysis

  • 2026 WTA Record: 0-0
  • WTA Beijing Record: 0-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 582
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 574 (Sep 2026)

Sun is one of the brightest young prospects in women's tennis and she's shown why on the junior circuit this year, making two major finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon before taking out the US Open title.

The 16-year-old reached the No. 1 ranking in June and now she gets a chance to test herself at WTA level after being awarded a wildcard into the 1000-level China Open.

Sun has spent most of her development in Belgrade under the tutelage of Serbian coach Goran Krivokuća and it will be interesting to see how she handles herself on such a big stage in front of her home fans.
