Both players come into this showdown in outstanding form - de Minaur has won 12 of his last 13 matches and seven on the bounce after taking home the title in Washington last week, while Shelton has reached at least the quarter-finals in his last three tournaments, winning 10 of his last 12 matches. These lightning quick courts suit both players' game style, so this has all the makings of an entertaining encounter under the lights in Toronto.
Shelton has gone three sets in his last two matches and de Minaur has gone the distance in two of his last three completed outings. I'm going to back Over 2.5 total sets here, with the edge going to Demon as he looks to extend his winning streak to eight matches.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Ben Shelton Form
Shelton has registered a 29-16 record so far this season, while he's gone 16-7 on hardcourt (including an Australian Open semi-final run at the start of 2025) to cement himself in the top 10 for the first time.
The American hasn't always had the best consistency so far in his young career, but he's doing well in that regard lately, making the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, the semi-finals in Washington and now the quarter-finals once more in Toronto, winning 10 of his last 12 matches coming into this contest.
It hasn't been smooth sailing into the last eight - Shelton dropped his first set in five previous meetings with Brandon Nakashima before surviving an almighty battle with Flavio Cobolli in the R16.
Shelton was forced to dig deep and recover from a break down in the deciding set before closing out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1) victory, which also doubled as the 100th tour-level win of his career.
Alex de Minaur Form
De Minaur comes into this encounter with a 38-13 record on the season, recently breaking his way back into the top 10 after capturing his first title of 2025 in Washington.
It's been another consistent season for de Minaur after he reached the Australian Open quarter-finals, Rotterdam final and Monte Carlo semi-finals to kick off the year.
Coming off a Wimbledon fourth round showing, where he went down in four sets to Novak Djokovic, de Minaur produced some great tennis to go all the way in Washington, saving three championship points in the final against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
De Minaur had a quick turnaround for Toronto, but he's benefitted from a kind early draw, beating Francisco Comesana in straight sets before countryman Chris O'Connell withdrew ahead of their R32 clash. The Aussie, who reached the Toronto final in 2023, needed three sets to get by Frances Tiafoe in the R16, prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Verdict
Both players went the distance in their previous round and these fast courts suit both players' game style, which should lend itself to a fun match.
De Minaur is as tough as a $2.00 steak and confident on an eight-match winning streak - I'll back the Aussie to edge this first meeting between the pair.
