It's been an outstanding tournament for both players - Tauson hasn't dropped a set to reach her second WTA 1000 semi-final of the season. The Dane had previously never been beyond the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament before this year, but now Tauson has also defeated back-to-back top 10 players in a single tournament to surge into the Montreal final four. Meanwhile, Osaka has produced her best, sustained tennis since returning to the tour as a mother, reaching her sixth WTA 1000 semi-final and first since Miami 2022.
For me, this kind of run from Osaka has been long overdue. You can see glimpses throughout her matches, but for whatever reason, consistency has eluded her. Not in Montreal this tournament - Osaka dropped just four games in a destructive quarter-final triumph over Elina Svitolina, while the former World No. 1 was leading Tauson in their only previous meeting before being forced to retire injured. I'm backing Osaka to continue her brilliant form and advance into the final.

Tauson technically leads 1-0, but there's a huge asterisk next to that 'win'. Osaka had just won the opening set 6-4 in their 2025 Auckland final at the start of the year, but was forced to retire with an abdominal injury.
Clara Tauson Form
What a fantastic season it's been for Tauson throughout 2025 - she's registered a 32-15 record on the season and came into this tournament at a career-high ranking of No. 19, while she's currently at a live ranking of No. 15 after making the semi-finals in Montreal.
Tauson started the year on fire with 15 wins from her opening 18 matches, including winning her third career title in Auckland, making the third round of the Australian Open, the semi-finals in Linz and the final at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai, where she beat Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina before going down to Mirra Andreeva in the final.
The Dane's form tailed off for the next couple of months, but it's safe to say she's back firing on all cylinders at the moment.
After reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon and the quarter-finals in Washington, Tauson has stormed into her second WTA 1000 semi-final of the year in Montreal, easing past Lucia Bronzetti and Yuliia Starodubtseva before posting consecutive top 10 scalps in straight sets over Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys.
Naomi Osaka Form
Osaka has put together a 25-11 record on the season and is without doubt playing her best tennis since returning to the tour from maternity leave.
The former World No. 1 and four-time major champion has showcased glimpses of her best tennis over the last couple of years, but was ultimately struggling with taking that next step and going deep into the biggest tournaments.
It was looking like 2025 was about to be another year of missed opportunities, but Osaka has given her US Open chances a huge boost with this Montreal run to the semi-finals, with a top 32 seeding basically ensured. That means Osaka wouldn't run into another seed until at least the third round.
But back to the matter at hand in Montreal. Osaka saved match points in the second round against Liudmila Samsonova and that just might prove the catalyst for her climbing back amongst the game's elite. Since then, Osaka hasn'f dropped a set, defeating Jelena Ostapenko, blitzing Anastasija Sevastova in just 49 minutes and crushing Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2 in the quarter-finals.

Verdict
Both players are obviously in fantastic form, but I have to keep backing Osaka.
The former No. 1 is dismantling opponents and I have some doubts as to whether Tauson has a third straight quality performance in her after knocking off Swiatek and Keys. I know Osaka does, so leaning with the Japanese to make the final.
