It's a blockbuster all-American showdown for a spot in the Canada Masters semi-finals as second seed Taylor Fritz and fourth seed Ben Shelton collide in Toronto on Wednesday night.

Fritz comes into this encounter having won 19 of his last 22 matches and chasing a second Masters 1000 title, while Shelton has produced some new-found consistency over the last couple of months, winning 11 of his last 13 matches as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Masters crown. Somewhat surprisingly, this will be just the second career meeting between the pair and the first in almost two-and-a-half years, so it's an intriguing clash for a number of reasons between the USA's two main men. Shelton is the youngest American Masters 1000 semi-finalist in two decades since Andy Roddick, while Fritz earlier in the tournament became the first American to make the quarter-finals of all nine Masters 1000 events.

It promises to be a tight contest between two huge serves on these extremely quick Toronto courts. It will come down to a couple of crucial points towards the back-end of sets, but Fritz is generally the more steely of the pair and I think he holds the slight advantage on Wednesday night.

Fritz leads 1-0, edging Shelton 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the second round of the 2023 Indian Wells Masters.

Fritz has compiled 36-12 record on the season and has arguably been the third-best player in the world behind Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz since the beginning of the grass swing.

Indeed, Fritz has won 19 of his last 22 matches coming into this semi-final clash, with most of them coming during the grass swing - although he has also become just the third player in 2025 to secure 20 hardcourt match victories.

The American collected two ATP titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne before progressing to the Wimbledon semi-finals, where it took Alcaraz in four sets to eliminate him.

After a quarter-final exit in Washington to launch his summer, Fritz has made his fourth semi-final in his last five events, defeating Roberto Carballes Baena 7-5 7-6, Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-2 and Jiri Lehecka 7-6 6-7 7-6 before toppling Andrey Rublev 6-3 7-6 in the quarter-finals.

Ben Shelton Form

Shelton has registered a 30-16 record so far this season, including a 17-7 mark on hardcourts, highlighted by his Australian Open semi-final run that has helped propel him into the top 10.

While consistency has eluded him at times early in his career, Shelton appears to be finding his rhythm. He’s now reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, the semi-finals in Washington and has punched his ticket to the final four in Toronto - winning 11 of his last 13 matches heading into this clash.

His Toronto campaign hasn’t been without turbulence. Shelton dropped a set against Brandon Nakashima and Flavio Cobolli, but finished strongly in both to close out both in a deciding-set tiebreak.

Shelton saved some of his best tennis for the quarter-finals against Washington champion Alex de Minaur, overpowering the Aussie in a polished 6-3, 6-4 triumph. Shelton fired down 13 aces and won 12 of the 19 points that went over nine shots, highlighting his underrated rally tolerance against one of the sport's best baseliners.

All signs point to a close contest and Shelton might even see the third deciding-set tiebreak of his tournament here.

Very tough to split the pair, but Fritz has slightly more experience in these situations, with Shelton playing his first Masters 1000 semi-final. Backing the second seed in a tight one.
