In a surprising WTA 1000 Canada Open final in Montreal, Naomi Osaka faces off against local teenage wildcard Victoria Mboko. This marks Osaka's resurgence to form, aiming for her first significant title since the 2021 Australian Open. Mboko, the first Canadian to defeat three Grand Slam champions in a single event, brings an impressive record. Despite Mboko's incredible run, predictions lean towards Osaka, given her stellar performance throughout the tournament. Fans can watch the match live, with streaming options available.

Naomi Osaka vs Victoria Mboko Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Not a single person would have predicted this final pre-tournament, but that's the beauty of sport as former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka and local teenage wildcard Victoria Mboko square off for the WTA 1000 Canada Open title in Montreal on Thursday night.

Mboko's run to the final has undoubtedly been the story of the tournament and arguably of the entire season. The 18-year-old has become just the fourth Canadian woman to make the final of this tournament in the Open Era, beating three Grand Slam champions along the way in Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina. Mboko saved a match point in a thrilling semi-final showdown with Rybakina on Wednesday, sending the patriotic local crowd into euphoria in one of the best atmospheres you'll see all season.

Meanwhile, Osaka also saved a match point all the way back in her second round against Liudmila Samsonova and has rode that momentum all the way into her first WTA 1000 final since 2022, beating Clara Tauson in straight sets in the semis. Osaka has rediscovered some of her best tennis this tournament and has dropped just one set in her six matches. In fact, this is the first time Osaka has won six matches in a row since she won the 2021 Australian Open title.

This promises to be a cracking contest and Montreal will be absolutely rocking as they get behind their local hope. However, I don't think that will be enough for Mboko. The teenager has obviously handled this entire tournament with maturity beyond her years and experience, but Osaka in this kind of form is a different beast. I've been waiting for Osaka to find this sort of tennis all year - I think it's finally arrived and that should culminate with the Japanese securing the silverware on Thursday night.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Naomi Osaka Form

It's been a stunning resurgence for Osaka, who entered this tournament with a 20-11 record on the season and struggling to consistently find the sort of tennis that propelled her to World No. 1 and four Grand Slam titles.

However, something has clicked in Montreal and Osaka is now just one win away from her biggest title since the 2021 Australian Open and just her third WTA 1000 crown. She's also guaranteed herself a US Open seeding, rising to a live ranking of No. 24.

After taking care of local wildcard Ariana Arseneault in the opening round, Osaka had to dig deep to save two match points on return against Samsonova before emerging a 4-6 7-6 6-3 winner. From there, it's been full steam ahead.

Indeed, Osaka hasn't dropped a set, taking out Jelena Ostapenko and her Latvian compatriot Anastasija Sevastova in just 49 minutes before a 6-2 6-2 dismantling of Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.

Osaka produced another brilliant performance in the semi-finals, ending the run of Clara Tauson - who had earlier knocked out 2025 Grand Slam winners Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys - by a 6-2 7-6 score, saving two set points in the second set tiebreak.

Victoria Mboko Form

I'm running out of adjectives to describe Mboko's extraordinary breakout season, which has seen her win 52 of her 61 matches at all levels, rising from outside the world's top 300 to a current live ranking of No. 34.

The 18-year-old continues to rewrite history and stands one win away from one of the most stunning title triumphs in the history of the sport.

Mboko has become the first Canadian ever to beat three Grand Slam champions in a single WTA event, with the teenager conquering Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina, to go with her other tournament wins over Kim Birrell, Marie Bouzkova and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Equipped with a thunderous baseline game and mental maturity beyond her teenage years, Mboko overcame a medical timeout after falling on her wrist to save a match point and break Rybakina twice when she was serving for the match in Wednesday's semi-finals, eventually prevailing 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) to reach her first ever tour-level final in incredible scenes.

Verdict

It's an amazing final in Montreal, but I think the home fans are going home disappointed.

Mboko has been absolutely incredible all tournament, but if Osaka maintains her current level and even reaches new heights for the final, then I don't see the teenager being able to hang with her. Osaka in straights.
