The Winx Stakes is the first Group 1 of the new season, a 1400m standard WFA feature run at Royal Randwick that's worth $1 million.

This feature received Group 1 status and a name change in 2018 (formerly run as the Warwick Stakes), with that first edition taken out by Winx.

After running into Anamoe when second in the 2022 edition of this race, Fangirl (barrier 9) atoned last year when taking out this Group 1 first-up, while she recorded another fresh win over the Randwick 1400m when bolting in with the Apollo Stakes back in February.

Injury forced her to the paddock after a runner-up finish second-up in the Verry Elleegant Stakes but she appears to be back on track, having completed two winter trials.

Via Sistina (barrier 7) will likely be aimed at a Cox Plate deeper into the spring, however, this 1400m feature is often a starting point for Chris Waller's middle-distance horses.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock took out the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes on Australian debut and she was then spelled after a runner-up finish behind a dominant Pride Of Jenni in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Another key contender from the Chris Waller stable is Riff Rocket (barrier 12), a three-time Group 1 winner at 2000m+ and the gelding is unbeaten from three first-up attempts, which includes a slashing return win over this trip in the CS Hayes Stakes last prep.

Semana (barrier 5) is a Ciaron Maher-trained mare has placed in three of her last four attempts (all at Group 1 level) since taking out the Group 3 Triscay Stakes in February and she has won a trial since her runner-up finish in the Tatt's Tiara on June 29.

The Waterhouse & Bott yard prepare Just Fine (barrier 4) and Tropical Squall (barrier 11), with the latter being a two-time Group 1 winner at Randwick last season.

The last of those victories came over this track/trip via the Surround Stakes in March, which Tropical Squall contested first-up.

A total of 12 runners make up the final field for the 2024 Winx Stakes.
